Nintendo was apparently thinking of a cell phone/gaming device at one point in time. They even went as far as to develop a patent for such a device. The patent was filed in November 2001 (same month as the Gamecube release), and just now showed up on the USPTO’s website.

The phone/gaming device is described in some detail in the documents. It’s an interesting read. I don’t think Nintendo has any plans today of such a device, but who knows; maybe phone capabilities will be added to the next iteration of the DS—now that would be cool
