This surprises me not one twit. Why pay that much for a system who’s graphics are not at all that much better then the 360? Sony thought they could sell PS3’s based on the popularity of the PS2 alone. I guess there learning that money talks and bullsh!t walks.

  2. kingLeonidus says:

wii wins all, PS3 is just more of the same

  3. Adam says:

    Not a fanboy, but…

If they are down 82% off of last weeks 600K then they are still selling at over 100k a week which is similar to the Wii’s numbers and better then the 360.

Sony’s had a bad enough US launch that we don’t have to knock a succesful european launch. You might as well knock Phil Harrisons unsuccesful charity PS3 auction, which sold a PS3 for get this retail.

  4. Bill says:

Glad to see that Sony is focusing on PSP sales and neglecting the PS3. Go PSP.

  5. mike says:

sounds about right. i have renewed faith in the market.

  6. bobdole says:

i’m just wondering where the numbers are. yeah 82% is a lot but how many units did they actually sell

  7. jared says:

I’d buy it for 400$ but for 600 bucks I’ll pass

  8. avidlinuxuser says:

If sales are down 82% in the U.K, Sony sold around 30,000 units.

  9. Sinzen says:

    Too funny.

Like anyone thought the sales would continue to go the way that the opening week sales went.

Let’s face it, PS3 is over priced regardless of the features. Once you get to that price point where it sits you can either go with a 360 and some nice extras or slap down a couple hundred more and build your own personal computer.

  10. Dannybuoy says:

Sure it’s gonna drop.. they have run out of fan boys to buy it. Now they got to convince consumers to part with half a grand! If it’s anything to go by several previously harcore PS2 gamers I work with are not even bothered about the PS3 (yet) and the company wii is getting rinsed virtually all day. Even the girls are getting involved!

    Check this out.. hilarious

  11. TonyUK says:

Firstly, the photo on this blog shows bias. Which might also explain the lack of any figures from the source article and direct comparisons.

The PS3 had a much bigger supply at launch than the 360/Wii, so its going to have a huge spike at the launch because of many months of anticipation and preorders.

The stats for the 360/Wii probably show that they nosedived too, but if they didnt fall so rapidly then that would be because there was less to go around at launch and so the demand remained higher after the first few days.

Unless there’s direct comparison of stats between consoles at launch it loses its context. You can’t draw anything from it. You can’t say the PS3 is a flop or anything. It’s worthless (or not news worthy anyway) information frankly.

Also worthless are reader comments like “sony fags” and “dumb fucks”. Quick reality check guys; you really think that carries weight with other readers that have half a brain. Most just skim over your worthless insults.

  12. Dan Nicholls says:

Isn’t this the most obvious thing to happen?

Hence why it’s a ’successful launch’. The first week included many pre-orders, people who’d been waiting for the system. Ah-so, many more would be sold during launch week, and sales would drop sharply after.
This is probably the same for Wii and 360.

Even if sales didn’t drop, there aren’t enough PS3’s left to equal launch weeks’ sales!
    Fanboys eh?

  13. si says:

Checked with my mate who works in gamestation in london, The only thing that accounted for the mass sells in the first week was people buying a ps3 to try to sell on ebay, out of 60 ps3s they had in stock, they sold 15 and 8 of them were returned…..

  14. Mistah Roth says:

What a lame post… of course its down that much. Last week was the launch, and the launch broke records. Do you honestly expect them to sell like 600,000 PS3s every week? Even at 20% of that per week is really good momentum.

Stupid FUD, you people are idiots.

  15. urza_insane says:

PS3 really isn’t overpriced, it’s just that nobody cares about blu-ray.

  16. Marten says:

I knew this would happen, the only reason why the PS3 sold such a large amount on launch is because when the 360 came out, everyone was holding out for a PS3, when they heard in Europe that it was delayed, they decided that it was cheaper, and better to get a 360. 360 sales shot up. PS3 only sold well on launch because people wern’t interested in 360, and waited for the PS3.

Wii is a different story, it’s just hard to get one of those…

  17. Geo says:

    PS3 IS overpriced. Consider this…
    Wii…………$250
    (2)games…….$100
    (1)controller..$050
    (2)nunchucks…$070
    (2)c.controller$040
    —-
    $510

The Wii pushed my upper limit for a gaming console.
250 is 50 too much … for ANY console. Six Hundred?
No way. I can buy a far better equipped PC for that
much. And, no, I don’t give a rip about how fast the
CELL processor is supposed to be. I don’t care that
you can see the sweat beading from a characters head.
    I don’t care about BluRay. Price the PS3 at 200, I
might get one, though I’d probably get a 360 instead…
only if it were 200 or less.

And the others were right…a huge drop after the first
week is to be expected. But, 82%? That is a bit high.

  18. Nick says:

This makes sense since Sony developed their system for the hardcore gamer. A hardcore gamer will not wait 7 days after product launch for their system. I would expect sales to remain flat while slowly rising in accordance to HDTV sales.

  19. ps3er says:

Mine looks like utter crap on my HDTV since the PS3 DOWNSCALES most games to only 480p if the TV only supports 1080i, like most CRT types.

  20. Wow, idiots.. says:

Well first off, most of you who has posted are idiots especially the guy who wants a PS3 for $200. Anyways, $600 for a PS3 is so worth it, you get a blu-ray player for very cheap (you will need one in a few years when it becomes the standard and takes over for dvds) the games will get better as time goes on (just watch some of the trailers for upcomming games and you’ll know what I’m talking about.) And as others have stated, the sales will drop, DER YOU IDIOTS! When you break records like the PS3 did you can’t expect it to keep that up every week or even half that a week. Otherwise they’d be selling 300,000 PS3s a week and pass the Wii and the 360 so fast your head would spin. So of course it’s going to drop significantly. And most people who hate the PS3 have never played one, don’t own one, or are just mad they can’t afford one. I’m just so glad I’m in the position that in about a year or two I can look at every PS3 hater and say I told you so.

P.S. I don’t hate on the 360 or Wii either, both are so much fun, I’m just backing my favorite system.

  21. Tell'em says:

That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to tell everyone who judges the ps3 on price alone. The typical blu-ray player costs roughly $1,000, and that’s just the player! The ps3 is also a super computer, forget buying an alien ware or dell when you can just install linux or fedora on it and hook up a usb keyboard and mouse to it. Also it has a 60 gig hdd (40 gigs more than 360 I think) which you can use for whatever if you choose to install an os. Not to mention it has all sorts of compact flash slots for adding music, videos, or pictures onto the console. I’m pretty sure neither the 360 or the wii have the different ports. one more thing, the ps3 is completely backwords compatible with all ps2 and ps1 games and does not require an update.

  22. NTell says:

alright listen up you ps3 lovers! the ps3 sucks. ive played it and it may have some decent games, but overall it doesnt live up to all the hype. And yes they knew the sales were gonna drop, but not as much as they did. The wii is selling like crazy and its been out for over 4 months. The blu ray thing was a good idea and thats it. it may be cheaper than a blu ray player, but still too expensive. Whos gonna buy a $1000 dvd player when a $100 one will suffice. And I believe most everyone already has a computer so we dont need another. you can also play music and movies on the wii and ive read about software that lets you save onto wii memory. so all-in-all, the ps3 is an overpriced all-in-one system of electronic things you already have.

  23. Geo says:

    To the ‘Wow Idiots’ thing:
I said I did not care about bluray. PS3 is NOT a supercomputer. It is a GAME CONSOLE. I don’t care what’s under the hood. Game consoles are worth no more than $200 to ME. Like I said, the Wii pushed it. As for dullray surpassing DVD…I will believe that when I see it. If I really cared, I’d buy the $200 HD-DVD add on for Xbox and put it on my Media Center PC. But, I don’t care. The ONLY way dullray will ‘win’ the format skirmish is if PS3 really takes off.

    And to ‘Tell em’:
The Wii absolutely does have an sd card slot allowing for videos, music and pictures. What it does not have is a hard disk-which, admittedly, was a dumb move on Nintendo’s part, dumber than the stupid console name. Last I saw, PS3 is NOT FULLY compatible with older games. The Euro release cannot play all of PS2’s games and that change is coming to the US version as well. I know a couple of folks that cannot play some of the PS2 games they have…so, you’re wrong about that.

BTW, I don’t hate the PS3 either. I just don’t see it as a good buy.

  24. Wow, idiots... says:

One other thing, the Blu-ray discs don’t scratch either. People have rubbed their discs with sand paper and they still play.

  25. Wow, idiots... says:

    Part 1

NTell: You have your opinion that the PS3 sucks, which is ok, but saying that you want a gaming system for $200 makes you sound pretty cheap. Of course the Wii is going to be selling like crazy, it costs $250, if you priced either the 360 or the PS3 at that price, the Wii would be dead in the water. I just have this feeling that the Wii is going to be a fad, it won’t just totally disappear but the hype will go away. I mean it really sounds enticing that you can buy a new gaming system for only $250 when the others cost $400 (you can’t do shit with the core 360) but to people like me who play a lot of games, after a few hours of swinging the controller around, it gets boring, very boring. And I also have to look at last-gen graphics, which is definitely a huge downfall. And when it comes to talking about how its a bunch of things that you already have in one, I can guarantee you that most people don’t have a blu-ray player, something that WILL be in most homes in the future. Blu-ray had it’s first movie (Casino-Royale) sell over 100,000 copies in only 9 months, two months faster than it took the first DVD to reach the same mark. Also to get what the PS3 has in terms of processing power, a majority of people don’t have that in a PC either. Of course it seems like a lot of extra stuff but when you own one, and you have free online play, the ability to store music, photos, movies, download movies, download games, go online, and have soon to be great online system (Home, that looks to be very good, and a potential system seller for the PS3) you have something that is worth way more than only $600. It also doubles as a PS2! Sure some games don’t play, but a majority do. Just think, it costs sony $840 just to make the thing and they sell it for $600, and when companies sell things don’t they try and make a profit? Basically everyone who has one knows they just got a great deal, and when you look at the line up of games coming out (the ones that aren’t even system sellers like KH3, FFXIII, MGS4, GoW3) you know that you made a good choice. If microsoft was smart, they would have made the HD-DVD standard in all their systems. People would have either had to wait for the PS3 or a Wii if they didn’t want it but people would have still bought it. It would also have switched how the race between Bluray and HD-DVD is going, which really could have left Sony for dead. And if you really want to get down to price, the only one worth it out of the Wii and 360 is the Wii. The Wii has innovation, a lot of it, while the 360 is just an upgraded last-gen console. It has been stated that Gears of War maxed out on the 360, which is pretty sad because right now we’re seeing the best PS2 games not PS3, PS2. So it took them a year to get the best of the 360, where the PS3’s power will never be fully exploited. So back to the price point:

  26. Wow, idiots... says:

PS3- Blu-Ray Player, Wifi, 60gb HDD, Card Slots, HDMI, Total =$600
    360- System($400) + HD-DVD ($200) + Wireless ($100) + 40 more gigs ($180) with no HDMI = $880

Oh and for all the 360 owners, MS just gave you the shaft with the 360 Elite, because you basically should get a whole new system instead of buying the 120gb HDD for $180, when I can get a MUCH cheaper 2.5″ laptop hard drive for my PS3. Sorry this is so long, I just need some release when all I see is the media bashing the PS3. Every person that I know that has one, loves it and doesn’t regret buying it one bit.

Sorry about the posts being in two sections, it wouldn’t post the whole thing at the same time, and that small comment above part 1, was supposed to be after this one.

  27. Jimminey Cricket says:

Bluray is no excuse for an outrageous price tag like this for an entertainment console. Aside from the fact that the Bleray\HDDVD battle is still raging, disk media will be dead in 2+ years anyway. Its already happening, all the big media companies are offering streaming media today, albeit in a non-HD capacity, but thats changing also.

At the moment the price tag in Ireland is €630, I know 1 person who bought one and I know alot of Sony fanboys, I was one myself. Ireland has more PSP’s per head capita than any country inthe world bar Japan, just to put some perspective on the marketplace. I’m a gadget freak, I couldnt wait to buy a PS3 but I was made to. In the meantime I bought a 360 and a Wii. I do agree that the Wii is mostly a novelty but I cant see what the PS3 offers that the 360 cant deliver, Ive been converted by the ineptitude of Sony and the excellence of Microsoft.

wtf? That movie didn’t even EXIST 9 months ago!

  30. NTell says:

Thats fine if blu ray will become the standard in homes, but i guarantee that when this occurs, blue ray players wont cost $1000. the ps3 may have the best in processor speed and what not, but most people dont need that much. they either surf the net or play solitaire. I can see a pc gamer maybe wanting it but thats it.

  31. DigitKid says:

    Wow, idiots…

PS3- Blu-Ray Player, Wifi, 60gb HDD, Card Slots, HDMI, Total =$600
    360- System($400) + HD-DVD ($200) + Wireless ($100) + 40 more gigs ($180) with no HDMI = $880

You seem to assume that every PS3 or 360 owner actually wants to watch HD Movies and you’re wrong. Though I agree that add-ons for all the systems are ridiculously high, and I do wish MS would allow the HDD be user upgradeable.

However, you only need HDMI to watch HD Movies not play HD games and even HDMI might be short lived with a new connection coming. People are upset with the price of the PS3 period and the first thing everyone says to justify it is, “It’s a cheap Bluray Player!” great but what if I don’t want a cheap Bluray Player, I want a cheap game system? Especially when people know the PS3 cost more not because of the Cell or the GPU or the HDD but because of the Bluray Drive!BTW by the time bluray even catches on, we will be able to get standalone player for $200 or less.

There are other problem with the system I won’t go into and when they actually get good games and online support and the price comes down to about $350 I’ll think about getting one.

Lastly, you forgot a few things with that math you did. 360 comes with a multimedia remote, PS3 doesn’t, 360 comes with HD Cables, PS3 doesn’t, 360 will scale the image to fit the resolution of the television, PS3 doesn’t and only gives you 480i. So, people are spending $600 for what again? Oh, a “cheap bluray player.”

  32. Wow, idiots... says:

To James, Blu-Ray movies have only been out for about 9 months, and Casino Royale was the first title to reach 100,000, while the first DVD title to sell over 100,000 was after DVD’s were selling for 11 months.

To DigitKid, in a few years, HD will be the standard, and then something else will come out making DVDs that are SD old news. So sooner or later most people will be buying a HDTV or HD movie player so why not get a head start now? Also a major reason for the blu-ray drive is the amount of data they will have in the games. If they used normal DVDs, you would have 3 and 4 disc games. Also, a cheap games system now is basically the Wii. They took last gen graphics and just added movement through their controllers, which is a great idea but it get’s old fast. And for the extra things the 360 comes with, the headset, remote, and cables that adds up to about what, less than $100. I can get the blue tooth remote for the PS3 for $25 or less, I got my HDMI cable for $3 + $2 shipping and it has amazing quality with it. And you can use any blue tooth headset with the PS3 or at least a majority. I needed one for my cell phone and now it works with my PS3. It’s not like those were anything major. I’ll go back to my first point to say that HD will be the standard soon, more and more people are buying HDTVs, as they become cheaper and cheaper. Only the people with the old CRT tv’s that only have 480p/i and 1080i have those downscaling problems. With the new tv’s that have 720p, it’s no problem. And finally, that small fix is just a firmware update away.

  33. Bleh says:

Just because a feature is slapped on a product, doesn’t mean we need it, or even want it, especially when it bumps the price up. I brought my PS2 simply to play games. I really could not care less about most of the non essential extras on the PS3 and I’m having to pay additionally because they’ve added them. It seems Sony tried to out-do everyone by throwing in as many features and advanced technology as they could and they’ve left us with this beefy bill to pay. As a previous poster said, you always end up paying even more for accessory etc so the price goes up even further. The result: no way in hell am I buying one at that price. Judging by its success atm, I’m guessing many others feel the same. If their margin allows them to bring the price down to what I feel is a more reasonable price, I’ll reconsider. Until then I’m sad to say I’m not even remotely interested in PS3.

  34. [...] of attention over the PS3 ’s UK/Europe release last week, sales have dropped 82% in the country.read more | digg [...]

  35. Wow, idiots... says:

Yes, Blu-ray was just slapped on the console, nothing major there. (sarcasm) And you can’t judge the success of the PS3 yet. If you want to start doing that, compare it to the 360, which had a 1 year head start, cheaper price tag, and high failure rate. Hmm from what I’ve heard the PS3 in its first four months has outsold the 360 in its first four months with the 360 and the Wii on the market. I also was just reading something on HDTV sales and last year they accounted for almost %40 of the TV sales in North America, and I think that tells you something, people are definitely shifting to HD which will eventually mean the buying of HD movie players because why else would you buy an HDTV? So why not buy a PS3 which includes a Blu-Ray player and gaming system, with many other useful features. Oh that’s right I forgot, $600 for a game system and blu-ray player that is normally around $800-$1000 is way too much.

  36. DigitKid says:

    Wow, idiots…

While I’ll agree with the bluetooth part of you argument, it is still a problem the $ony has it currently implemented. You always have to re-sync the controllers, again though I wish Wii and 360 did the same just better.

I’ll also agree that everything is moving towards HD but again that’s still a few years out before it become affordable enough to “just get one” and most people aren’t buying them just to watch HD movies or games, via a disk. Most people who actually jumped on the HD TV bandwagon were sports fans. Further more nearly all HD viewing is done via cable and disk networks not by Bluray or HD-DVD. I don’t have an HD TV set neither do most of the people I know. 1080p will be nothing in a few years when they finally push out 2K and 4K. Not to mention the constant updating of HDMI (PS3 1.3 while most sets are only 1 or 1.2 ready).

Now about all that space that bluray has, yes the storage is good but is it really that much trouble to swap out a game disk? Most games barely used up a DVD-9. With that in mind how many games do you think use up even half of the space that is available? Because it has yet to show up in any game currently released or benefit any of the games. What good is having all that space if the games suck!? Again though you dropped a grand for what again?

Scaling, will NOT be fixed with a firmware update and that’s been addressed. “The system has given a higher priority to 1080i signals so, if available, the console will default to 1080i over 720p. This means that if your HDTV supports 720p, and a game’s native resolution (like Resistance: Fall of Man) is 720p, it should display fine in that resolution. If the native resolution is 1080p (NBA07, the XMB interface, Blu-ray movies) and your set supports 1080i and 720p, the console will automatically default to 1080i due to the higher preference, regardless of what your preference is. If you disable the 1080i output so everything will play in your preferred 720p, your Blu-ray movies will drop down to 480p.” Basically it’s as good as it’s going to get, which reminds me of another key fact about the PS3; there aren’t any 1080p games for it (and NBA07 does not count)! To be fair neither is the Wii, but the 360 has them coming and has had them in 1080i and it even upscales 720p games again something the PS3 doesn’t do too well.

Though I do agree with you on some issues the others aren’t small issues that a firmware will fix because if it was it should’ve been by now. Bluray is a good storage medium but is worthless if the content sucks or is still less than what was promised by Sony.

The shift to HD is almost a given considering how many CRT sets you now see in the stores vs HD sets. They are less and less available. Much like CRT computer monitors, you’ll only find them far and few in between.

Lastly the whole thing about both Bluray & HD-DVD is that it’s not like VHS vs DVD. VHS vs DVD was a huge difference and the tons of benefits dvd had over VHS. DVD vs Bluray & HD-DVD, there is little difference or benefit for the average consumer. Many of whom are fine with DVD quality and the quality of DVD upscaled. Neither of these formats will last long as a delivery system for movies as more household tap into broadband for HD. Even HDTVs can be hooked onto a computer.

  37. Wow, idiots... says:

You’ve brought up a lot of good points and I’m really having fun with this. One thing you’re brought up is that 1080p right now is above its time and you said that there will soon be 2k and 4k. There will be no reason for that at all, for right now, unless you have a 50 inch tv, the human eye can’t really tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. As for your comments about storage on the discs, this will allow game devs to create extreme worlds with great detail. Also the game devs have just started using a technique called texture streaming, which is what Gears Of War used to make the environments look so realistic and like you were in them. Insomniac devs stated that they weren’t able to use texture streaming in RFoM but they will be using it in Rachet and Clank. Also, game devs for the 360 have to keep finding ways to compress their data into the small DVD 9’s while the Blu-Ray discs will have no problem with storage and allow the game devs to put as much detail and data into a game as they want. Your last point about Blu-Ray and HD-DVD not lasting long, I highly doubt that. Yes it is getting easier to just download HD content off of the internet but then you have to download it, and hook it up to your HDTV and most people don’t attach their televisions to their PC’s. For one thing, most Americans are extremely lazy and buying a Blu-Ray Disc or an HD-DVD is much more convenient to them rather than having to go through their computer. Although I agree it would be much easier to download HD content, the physical HD content from retailers will not go out of style.

    Guys,
The fact that the PS3 comes with a Bluray player does not mean that it is good value for money. It is a known fact that playing movies on any console shortens the life of the console due to how hard the machine has to work to to play these. This would mean that the bluray drive would wear out much faster and you would need to replace the whole console. The 360 however has a seperate HD player, this means that when the HD player is knackerd you can just replace the player and not the whole concole….

Sorry, I own the X-360 and have 54 Games, I also have the Xbox HD DVD Drive, I am very happy with my purchase. My friend who bought a PS3, who also happens to be my online gaming partner…. Played the PS3 for 2 days, then put everything carefully back into its retail box and re-sold it on ebay.co.uk “He ended up getting less than he paid for it” because of ebay fee’s and paypal comission fee’s.!

The main reason for selling da PS3, is because we both agreed that the X-360 Games and Graphics are much better, and it did NOT come with full backwards compatibility like US and Jap Models, the emotion Chip had been removed in all UK European PS3 Models, which was Crazy, after all the promises Sony made.! also the $850= £425 UK Price is far too much.!

We both loved the PS1 and PS2, but the PS3 is a Failure, and Blueray is NOT all that important because Blueray Disc’s are 2x Times the price of normal DVDs in da UK.! all in all, Sony will be forced to stop producing PS3’s because “all the Major Game developers, are giving their loyalty to Microsoft Xbox 360″.

put it this way any fan boys. if the ps3 flopps n they just abandon it like all pc gamers/360 fanboys think, (lets face it, ur the same ppl) think off all the people that forked out £450 odd or more that will sudenly loose it, it will be worthless. its like its what you all seem to want to happen. all ps3 gamers will be mega dissapointed. now do u realy think sony is going to let that happen? if people loose faith in one of their products, they may loose faith in others and loose there potential future market. n i think for such a large scale company like that, i dont think they will evenlet it get that close.

to be honest, it takes up less room aswell than the 360 when you think of all the bits its has built in that you have to cash out on the 360 just to have them all clustered around it? n for all the aditions u will buy to make it equivilent, (hd drive, wifi, hard drive, cooling fan, wireless controllers, hdmi, xbox live) they would be exactly the same price, but you dont get blue ray for 360 or wii, and doubt you ever will. now if you got all those parts together to make it equivient n put them side by side, what is more space consuming? u cant argue.

dont matter if sales drop, sony will have something up there corperate sleave to sort it out. guaranteed. unlike the first ff movie. now that was a flop n a half. i mean pure 100% saggage. heh

You can[‘t really compare the Wii with the PS3. They are going in different directions, attracting very different audiences. And the Wii has it hands down on space. As far as the 360 goes, you may be right on all the add-ons and stuff, which is why I don’t like Microsoft. But you also have to buy a cooling fan for the PS3 and even add-ons to have memory cards. It may come with a harddrive, but at least put a slot there so you can play older game saves. And honestly, I could care less about a bluray player on my game console. It may be cheaper than standalone bluray players, but there’s no point in paying 35-40 bucks on a dvd when you can pay 20 and the difference in graphics are insignificant.
