We recently reported on the announcement of Nintendo’s latest release in the successful 3DS line of handhelds – the controversially named ‘New’ 3DS – and today we have more details about the new features that separate this iteration from past versions.

Firstly, and arguably most importantly, is the improved 3D viewing. To achieve a more stable 3D experience – that is, one that is viewable from angles other than directly in front of the system – the New 3DS uses the inner camera to track your head movement. To achieve the more stable 3D in darker conditions, the camera uses an infrared LED light. There is a caveat – apparently this feature may not work properly if the player is wearing any kind of head accessory, or if strong light is detected in the frame. We certainly can’t wait to test the system ourselves!

Other details of the ‘New’ line of 3DS include:

  • ZL and ZR buttons can switch between tabs on the Internet browser
  • C-stick can be used to zoom in
  • there’s a handy strap hook located close to the ZR button
  • the system won’t be packaged with an AC adapter – at least, not in Japan
  • a 4GB micro SD card is provided with the system
  • the same wireless security protocols used in previous 3DS models will be used.
