I obviously can’t speak for everyone but I do not find myself being terribly effected by the recent string of ‘I Am Not A Gamer’ ads that Nintendo has been touting.  If you are not quite sure what I am talking about, then see the end of the post for a full recap of the commercials that I am referring to.  I think Nintendo honestly was just trying to advertise these games but ended up negatively impacting their longtime fans in the process.  Many have really taken offense to the new advertisements and others seem to have been simply rubbed the wrong way after seeing them.  I can understand that not everyone plays games and I can even understand Nintendo’s continuing desire to try and lure in the ‘casual’ audience.  I feel Nintendo was trying to directly appeal to people who don’t ordinarily play games and while this is quite apparent to me when I watch the commercials, I guess it is not so plain to see for others.  In the video ‘What’s Wrong With Gamers Nintendo?’ below you can listen to the opinion of one gamer who doesn’t necessarily like the I Am Not A Gamer ads.  While I agree with him about the fact that a large majority of gamers grew up playing on Nintendo platforms, this is changing at a rapid pace.  Now kids are growing up with a slew of different gaming options.  There are a variety of different platforms and different play styles.  Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, Casual, Hardcore, Mobile, Social, and this doesn’t even touch on the different genre categories (which seem to be reinvented constantly).  I grew up playing Nintendo platforms because I am old.  My stepson will likely have fond memories of blasting someone’s face off in Halo and not playing Mario Party on the Wii.  I am alright with that because he enjoys a different type of gaming experience than me.  Don’t get me wrong I love my own ‘hardcore’ experiences as well but I also like to play the traditional Nintendo experiences that I remember.  My point is, the gamer below seems to feel like these new Nintendo ads are alienating their fans.  I don’t believe that was Nintendo’s intent here but that is the way it has come across for many longtime fans.  Here is what it boils down to, Nintendo is just repeating what has worked for them in the past and that is to capture the attention of the people who don’t game on a regular basis.  In my honest opinion, I think people are being a little too sensitive about these ads and they need to just let it go.  Nintendo has not forgotten the ‘core’ gamer and if you don’t believe me, then go play the Wii U and then let me know if you feel that Nintendo has forgotten you.
