Nintendo has released their 2nd quarter and first six month fiscal results, end of March to end of September.  Let us start with the good news.

The 3DS has sold 3.89 million hardware units this fiscal year, which brings the total to 34.98 million 3DS handhelds sold to date. The top seller for the first six months was Animal Crossing: New Leaf that has surpassed 2.49 million units worldwide.

Now, let us get to the bad news.

Only 460,000 Wii U consoles were sold worldwide in the first six months of the current fiscal year. 160,000 of those were sold in the first quarter. That means the Wii U has only sold 300,000 since the end of June. This brings the Wii U world totals to 3.91 million units.

Nintendo has admitted that “the Wii U hardware still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits,” with advertising and continued research and development bringing the profits down. Nintendo hopes they can turn this all around with strong first party releases.

For “Wii U,” we attempt to concentrate on proactively releasing key first-party titles towards the coming year in order
to regain momentum for the platform. For the coming year-end sales season, we will release key first-party titles such as
“Wii Party U” and “Super Mario 3D World,” and offer the Wii U hardware at an affordable price by bundling software
with the system. We will also try new promotional activities such as a campaign where users can experience “Wii Fit U”
free of charge

Over the first six months Nintendo has posted a revenue of 196.5 billion yen ($2.0 billion), which is down 2.2 percent year-over-year, and profits of 600 million yen ($6.1 million), which compared to losses of 28.0 billion yen ($285.2 million) year-over-year.
