KD: How long have you been an illustrator? When did you realize it was something you wanted to do for a living?

MP: I grew up in a very artistic house actually. My father was an architect, he drafted and built the house I grew up in. Mom wrote and did photography, but my brother is the one who drew and I inspired me to. In high school I had the same dream as every other teen who loved video games and manga did, of course move to Japan and be famous there. That dream switched to american comics when I finally got into cape comics, but it wasn’t until I met a comic club at my college which hilariously was filled with game development majors. I kept my major as animation but geared my studies toward how to apply them to art. And now I’m a concept artist and animator for a game company. So I guess I always knew I wanted to illustrate, but I had a good soul searching journey on where to apply it.

KD: Which do you prefer more, sketching or digital artwork?

MP: Mostly digital, but much of the time I’m trying to simulate analog work in my digital work. I love digital’s forgiveness for my ink work and array of color. …and working large doesn’t take over my entire kitchen table.

KD: Please explain a little about some of the projects you are currently working on, or have worked on in the past.

MP: My first illustration job was at Schell Games as a junior 2d artist which I greatly enjoyed. Between that and my current job working for Quadratron I’ve bounced around commissions and participated in the Animal Crossing Collaboration Project, and had the joy of my Kirby piece printed in the Kirby Dream Zone. At the moment I’m working on a card game called Mahou Shojo: Fight Like A Girl, obviously inspired by magical girl anime. Quadratron should be releasing a playable prototype of our upcoming game Wizards! Beards of Power, very soon.

KD: What is your favorite Nintendo game or series? Why?

MP: Oh no this is where it becomes hard. Pokemon, Animal Crossing and Zelda are my favorites, I can’t choose one! They are all very colorful games with all so much to do. They are all so rich in character and really give a sense that all those around you really are your friend and trust you with saving the world or just getting a peach for them because they’re too lazy.

KD: What games inspire you the most when drawing?

MP: Anything with striking visuals. Windwaker, Fantasy Zone, Animal Crossing, Final Fantasy Tactics, Chibi Robo, Pokemon, Kirby, Chrono Trigger… This list is endless so I’m stopping there.
