Yesterday marked the official start of the winter season. Of course I’d never know from the unseasonably balmy weather where I live, but my calendar tells me that winter has indeed arrived. With this in mind, The Question Block is bringing up the timely topic of seasonal games. Do you have a certain game (or level within a game) that you associate with a winter wonderland? Let us know – if this topic takes off we might revisit it come March 20th.

I remember getting Super Mario 64 for Christmas in ’96 and the snow level early on will always be associated with winter for me. Loved racing that penguin :)

I’ve good memories playing through Cool Cool Mountain as well. Such a bright level, and I loved seeing the snowflakes fall when riding the lift.

The Freezeezy Peak level from Banjo Kazooie comes to mind whenever I think of holiday themed levels. I love how cheerful the level is, and all of the scenery is a lot of fun to take in and explore. As far as a game that I associate with the holidays goes, I’ll never forget opening up my Gameboy/Link’s Awakening bundle on Christmas. Every time I boot up that game and hear the music from the intro sequence, I relive that Christmas morning in my mind!

Is it strange that I think of Silent Hill when I think of winter and gaming?

Several games came to my mind, but the first was Mario Kart for some reason. Mount Wario is one of my favorite new MK8 tracks, driving down that large snow covered mountain. Plus there’s Sherbet Land for retro winter goodness. The Animal Crossing track is awesome in all seasons, but I find the winter one to be quite visually striking.

For me I guess I would have to say in Super Mario Bros. 3 I am not exactly sure of the level # but it was the one ice level where you had to use the fire-flower to melt the icecubes and colect the coins.
