GAME Reveal: Greatest Computer Games of All Time Mario Number One

Posted June 18th @ 5:09 am by jahiggin

Portly plumber Mario can lay claim to being the greatest gaming icon of all time, beating off stiff competition from the likes of Master Chief, Solid Snake, Lara Croft and Sonic the Hedgehog in GAME.co.uk’s Greatest Games of All Time vote and securing an impressive 11% of the overall top 100.

His 1995 Super Mario 64 at number 5 is his highest ranked title, while other Mario games in the top 25 include Mario Kart Wii at number 13, the beloved NES (and later SNES) platformer Super Mario Bros. 3 at 16 and the stunning Nintedo Wii game Super Mario Galaxy at 21.

In comparison, arch-rival Sonic the Hedgehog’s best entry is at number 19, while only three Sonic titles made the cut, one of which, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, also stars the moustachioed, squeaky-voiced Nintendo mascot.

    Take-Two responds to EA extension

Posted June 17th @ 2:38 pm by jahiggin

New York, NY— June 17, 2008 — Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTWO) today responded to Electronic Arts Inc.’s (NASDAQ:ERTS) announcement that it is extending for a fourth time its unsolicited conditional tender offer to acquire all of Take-Two’s outstanding shares.

As reported by EA, only 6,139,824 of Take-Two’s outstanding shares, or approximately 7.9% of the total, tendered into EA’s offer as of 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on June 16, 2008.

“The latest extension of EA’s unsolicited, highly conditional tender offer does not alter the fact that their proposal still significantly undervalues Take-Two, a fact that is reflected in the overwhelming number of stockholders who still have not tendered their shares,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of the Board of Take-Two. “Our Board of Directors remains in unanimous agreement that the proposal is contrary to the best interests of Take-Two stockholders, and the Board continues to recommend that stockholders not tender their shares to EA. The Board remains focused on the strategic process that began formally on April 30 to consider all alternatives to maximize value. We believe that these alternatives, which may include a business combination or remaining independent, will deliver greater value to stockholders than the current EA offer.”

Ben Feder, Chief Executive Officer, commented, “Take-Two’s vast potential to create and enhance stockholder value has become even more evident in recent weeks, with the runaway success of Grand Theft Auto IV, a product pipeline that is one of the strongest and most creative in our history, and continued operational and financial progress. We believe that any alternative we consider must fully reflect the value we are creating and capture that value for the benefit of our stockholders.”

Gearbox’s Pitchford: Wii ‘Risk’ Paid Off, Gamecube Success Underrated

Posted June 13th @ 1:59 pm by jahiggin

“I don’t agree that [Nintendo] were on a downward trend, but I do agree that they wanted to reach more customers than they were reaching.

Depending on how you look at it, Nintendo arguably won last generation in terms of return on investment, if you think about how much they spend, versus how much they made.

Microsoft was in second place in installed units… They were like a billion and change in the hole with Xbox 1.

Sony was profitable late in the PlayStation 2’s existence. They were very profitable, though, because they had such an install base and so much software, and they were selling the software so well.”

Continuing on his ruminations about Nintendo’s place in the market transitioning from the Gamecube to the Wii, Pitchford noted:

“Nintendo, though, in terms of return on investment, might have been in the best spot.

The Gamecube itself, they’re making money on their games, they’re making money on the hardware, they’re making money in every single place. Meanwhile, everyone else is losing money.

Sony and Microsoft both initially lost money on hardware and had to spend the marketing on top just to get it installed. Then they had to make it up over time with software. Microsoft is still trying to make it up…

…but [Microsoft is] having positive quarterly balance sheets now. We’ve seen a couple of those. By the way, I love the Xbox 360 platform. I’m a big fan of it.”

Finally, Pitchford addresses the Wii’s success in the market, explaining:

“Nintendo had some goals there, so they took a risk, and it’s nice that they took a risk instead of doing the same thing.
