The Legend of Zelda and Philosophy

Posted August 13th @ 6:47 am by jahiggin

With both young and adult gamers as loyal fans, The Legend of Zelda is one of the most beloved video game series ever created. The contributors to this volume consider the following questions and more: What is the nature of the gamer’s connection to Link? Does Link have a will, or do gamers project their wills onto him? How does the gamer experience the game? Do the rules of logic apply in the game world? How is space created and distributed in Hyrule (the fictional land in which the game takes place)? How does time function? Is Zelda art? Can Hyrule be seen as an ideal society? Can the game be enjoyable without winning? The Legend of Zelda and Philosophy not only appeals to Zelda fans and philosophers but also puts video games on the philosophical map as a serious area of study.

The summary above is from Amazon.com, and as of right now, their release date is November 28th.

Posted August 4th @ 5:39 pm by jahiggin

“I can tell you that no one at EA is measuring Spore with the yardstick created by The Sims. They’re two totally different animals. Spore is a game that has a lot to offer players long after they make the original purchase–a much different business model than traditional video games.” - Patrick Buechner, vice president of marketing for Maxis

Should video games be regarded as art?

Posted August 4th @ 9:55 am by jahiggin

This is a discussion that I never thought was a discussion. Why would anyone think that video games were not art, and the people who create them were not artist? Here is the Dictionary definition of art:

the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

What is aesthetic principles? Here is a brief summary:

The aesthetic experience consists in enjoying a thing for its intrinsic beauty, for what it is in itself. The nature of this enjoyment is not, however, uniform. It is differentiated by whichever emotions are predominant when that thing is being experienced, and some emotion is always aroused when a person is intimately engaged with a thing.

I am not sure but I believe that video games bring me joy, and send me through a ton of emotions. Do you remember how you felt in the first Mario each time you defeated a Castle and the princess was in the next castle? Do you remember what you felt when you finally saved that princess? There is a lot more I can say, but it would only be my opinion.
