The programming award went to Capcom’s MT Framework engine, which beat out the Gran Turismo series, Virtua Fighter, Pikmin, and Ridge Racer. MT Framework is the engine that Capcom uses for games like Devil May Cry 4, Lost Planet, and the upcoming Resident Evil 5. Capcom was honored for being quick to adopt the notion of a company-wide game framework.
The visual arts award went to Sony Computer Enteratinment’s ICO, which beat out the Gran Turismo series, the Soul Calibur series, the Final Fantasy series covering parts VII to XII, and the Metal Gear Solid series. ICO was noted for its sense of atmosphere which ended up having great influence throughout the world.
Producer Fumito Ueda shared a few comments as he and his team members received the award. On his mysterious new project, he said that while it’s still a ways off, he hopes that players look forward to it.
Nintendo dominated the remaining three rewards. Game Design went to Super Mario Bros., which beat out Dragon Quest, Virtua Fighter, Pokemon, and Monster Hunter. Sound went to the Zelda series, beating out the Gran Turismo series, the Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball series, New Onimusha Dawn of Dreams, and Hudson’s Zettai Onkan Otoda Master. Nintendo’s Takashi Tezuka and Koji Kondo took the stage to accept these rewards.
The final “special award” was given to who else but Shigeru Miyamoto. The CEDEC advisory panel gave this general award out in recognition of Miyamoto’s influences not just on the Japanese game market, but on the worldwide market.
