Video Game Event In Phoenix Bridges Gap Between Retro and Modern Gamers
Phoenix, AZ – Video game enthusiasts from around the world will converge the weekend of Friday, August 28th for Monroe-A-Palooza 2009, the Phoenix, Arizona gaming party and fan event for the MonroeWorld network of internet sites and radio shows.
Now in it’s 2nd year, the annual show features a variety of video game themed entertainment, including opportunities to play rare vintage games on their original hardware, the hottest new games from today’s consoles, as well as VIP access to private arcades in the Phoenix area.
At the epicenter of the event is radio personality Shane R. Monroe, from which the event takes its name. Host and creator of one of the internet’s longest running radio shows, Retro Gaming Radio, Monroe is considered by many to be a pioneer in internet radio, having released his shows online long before Apple put the “pod” in “podcasting”. Retro Gaming Radio reached a 10 year milestone in 2008, a full decade of retro gaming content and commentary to the delight of fans worldwide.
“Social networking has created a world where everyone can play together but never really be together. Monroe-A-Palooza looks to change that by bringing fans of the Monroeworld community together for a real-live gaming session that goes all weekend long. Whether it’s playing old games like Pac-Man or blasting the enemy in Call of Duty 4 – we’ll be doing it all in the same room. Gaming should be about having fun, regardless of the number of pixels. Doing it in person is just something most of us don’t do anymore. We’re trying to fix that”, stated Monroe during the busy days of preparation prior to the show. “Until you can reach through a headset and smack your teammate for accidentally shooting you, there is going to be a need for gamers to gather together in person and play. Monroe-A-Palooza offers that experience; playing games both new and old with people you actually know by name – not by a gamertag.”
Monroe’s most current project, Passenger Seat Radio, is now in its second year online. PSR features a broader range of discussion topics, everything from current events and politics, to every day happenings surrounding the host’s 13-mile commute to work in the metropolitan Phoenix area. Shane keeps a little closer to his video gaming roots with his other show, Dual Screen Radio, dedicated to Nintendo’s popular handheld gaming console the Nintendo DS.
This year’s Monroe-A-Palooza event features appearances by many MonroeWorld personalities including Dual Screen Radio Co-Host Chris “Womp” Hentschel, longtime Retro Gaming Radio personalities Fernando “Flare” Garcia and Troy Toulou, and Wii Minute Radio Host Alex J. Lopez. Mike Kennedy of ChaseTheChuckwagon.com will also be at the show.
The show will also be broadcast Live via the official website with non-stop coverage from the show floor throughout the day Saturday, August 29th. Visit www.monroeapalooza.com for more information.
