Yesterday I heard reports from our friends over at GoNintendo that one could skip updates and have it downloaded in the background. I have confirmed this, at least with a game update, on my own system…by accident. After putting ZombiU into my Wii U the updating process started. Because of some server error it never started and I was forced to select cancel to skip the update. I went back to ZombiU, after switching to Netflix briefly, to find the download ready to install.

The only downside to this is most game updates are full of Miiverse and online features. One may not be able to perform any of these two functions before updating.
