Okay first off, I love the Seymour. I love Futurama (Fox needs to bring it back agian.) Second was a reason given that the New 3DS XL does not have a face plates? Sorry if I missed the info somewhere.
Based on the US sales of the current 3DS models and the availability of shelf space in US retailers Nintendo felt that the N3DS XL was the more marketable version and made the decision that made the most business sense.
I am not sure why the XL version does not have swappable face plates itself. Retailer shelf space probably has something to do with it.
Frankly I’m okay with it because I would never swap out my awesome Monster Hunter LE design anyway.
I knew about the marketing part, I just was not sure if I missed whether or not they explained why there were no faceplates for the New 3DSXL. Oh well I plan to pick up one of these later this week.
Come to think of it, when I took off the back plate to change the Micro SD I was surprised at how flimsy the back plate felt. Maybe it has something to do with the physical size of the hardware needed to build an N3DS with an XL screen.

I noticed that too. Maybe an XL size faceplate wasn’t strong enough to withstand being swapped out multiple times and wore out too fast when they were testing it. There must be some good reason for it. I get the feeling that everyone would’ve been happy with an XL system with colored buttons and faceplates. There was a compromise made somewhere.

That could be, honestly I really am satisfied with my New Black. Also you were right about part of the worry being shelve space, I do not understand that though because look at all of the shelve space Skylanders has.

I think the difference with Skylanders is that they sell like hotcakes on multiple platforms (what is it like 6 now?) while N3DSXL facpaltes would have a potential market of around 1/2 of N3DS owners. This also assumes that 50% of N3DS adopters would choose the non-XL version which is a liberal estimate as the XL has consistently sold better since it’s introduction.
You might also take into account the fact that Nintendo is not exactly printing money today like they were in the heyday of the Wii, so they are far more likely to be making more conservative business decisions (anyone else having trouble finding a Mega Man amiibo).

Yeah, I see what you mean about the Skylanders, I can say that I am glad that I never played any it makes it easy to avoid. The conservative marketing is also probably a good point.
