Japanese Sales Charts: Super Smash Bros. Storms the Charts (Week Ending September 14, 2014)
The latest sales data from Japan is here and it was a big week for our Japanese friends by the looks of it, with a couple of new releases to keep them busy.
In software, the biggest seller this week was Nintendo’s own Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, which stormed the charts to sell just shy of 1 million copies in its opening weekend. For those counting, this is more than ten times the number sold for the second place game, and about three times the total sales of the remaining top twenty.
Nintendo’s next entry was the ever-present Yokai Watch 2 at number 4. The Wii U had two entries again this week with Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart 8 coming in at 19th and 8th places, respectively. Bayonetta 2 releases this week in Japan so it will be interesting to see how this game fares in the Wii U charts.
In hardware, the 3DS retained its number one position, with about a 30% boost in sales. Unfortunately the Wii U moved down one spot to fourth position this week, the first change in the order of hardware sales in many months.
Check out the full list below and let us know your thoughts on the way things were last week in Japan.

great stuff on the 3DS side… best handheld ever. however I’m pretty sad for the Wii U 😟 I want it to succeed so bad even though I don’t own it… because I definitely will eventually.

Agreed on both accounts! I love my 3DS and Wii U, but yes I also wish the Wii U was better received :-/ I wonder if Smash will have anywhere near the same effect when it comes to Wii U later this year?
