Nintendo Didn’t Originally Plan 3D For DS Successor
After the release of the DS in 2004 Nintendo right away started working on its successor. Nintendo came up with many prototypes of what they were looking for in the DS successor. It wasn’t until the end of 2008 that the idea of using 3D came into play. To test out the idea, Nintendo hooked up a Wii to a 3D screen and proceeded to play games like Mario Kart. Many of the top Nintendo executives enjoyed the way the game looked and how Mario interacted in the 3D environment.
Also the use of a gyroscope wasn’t planned until way later in the process. In fact it wasn’t until right before E3 2010 that Mr. Miyamoto had the idea to add the motion control to the handheld stating that he felt something was missing.
