Nintendo Direct Recap — 4/17/2013
We got quite a few announcements this morning from Nintendo. Here’s the quick and dirty:
3DS
- Mario & Luigi: Dream Team — Next installment in the Mairo & Luigi RPG franchise, coming July 12
- Mario Golf: World Tour — Includes international online play, coming this summer
- Mario Party — Includes 7 boards and 81 minigames, due this winter
- Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D — balance adjusted and levels added for 3DS, coming May 24
- Yoshi’s Island 3DS — stays true to the original in terms of style and gameplay, stay tuned for details
- Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move — puzzle game coming to eShop on May 9
- Animal Crossing: New Leaf — 3DS XL bundle announced, June 9
- Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons — these classic games are coming to the eShop on May 30
- New Legend of Zelda game — set in the world of Link to the Past, scheduled for holiday season
- Bravely Default: Flying Fairy — RPG beloved in Japan, coming to NA next year
- Professor Layton: Azran Legacy — finishing the second Layton trilogy, coming next year
- Level-5 eShop trio — some of Japan’s top developers are releasing The Starship Damrey, Bugs vs. Tanks!, and Attack of the Friday Monsters! for the eShop
- Shin Megami Tensei IV — this immersive RPG is launching on July 16, coming as a Box Set including a soundtrack, slipcase, and art book
WiiU
- Pikmin 3 — Including flying pink Pikmin, coming August 4
- Super Luigi U — New version of Super Mario Bros. U, coming this summer
- Earthbound coming to Virtual Console this year
- Game & Wario — full of delightful minigames, coming June 23
- Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate — update coming allowing off-TV play
- Update coming with faster load times
- Virtual Console and Panorama view coming next week

Even though they are a ton of fun, I feel Mario is being overexposed. There are too many Mario games. I wish Nintendo would stop relying on their mascot quite so much, and tap some of their lesser known IP’s. Or even better, innovate with some new ones.
