Nintendo first-half 2012 fiscal results
– $367M operating loss
– 5.06M 3DS
– 5.5M Wii U forecast
Also, Nintendo has reported weaker than expected 3DS sales out side of Japan. This is the number one reason for the operating loss. Nintendo is counting a lot of their next half forcast on the Wii U.

It’s difficult to tell how much anticipation for the Wii U is playing into this last quarter. There are a lot of people who are anticipating the console, but the Wii U’s level advertising is nowhere near the Wii’s.

@MatthewPaxton The Wii U’s advertising campaign has been quite weak but hopefully Nintendo rectifies this sooner rather than later. It would be not be a good idea for Nintendo to be relying on fan support early on in the Wii U’s life cycle. I also have to disagree with your statement, “It’s difficult to tell how much anticipation for the Wii U is playing into this last quarter.” GameStop has recently announced that it has upwards of 250,000 customers currently on a Wii U waiting list. This is not including current pre-orders through the retailer, pre-orders at other retailers, consumers waiting for the console to actually hit store shelves, and consumers that are currently unable to obtain a pre-order. This is a not a bad figure, especially during this prerelease timeframe. Initial Sales will likely exceed this figure. Additionally, there is still 24 days until the console’s release and if Nintendo can give their advertising strategy a boost soon, they could really grab the attention of a lot more consumers and get some really spectacular sales figures during this holiday shopping season.
