Nintendo to end operations in Brazil
Some sad news for Nintendo fans in Brazil. According to reports Juegos de Video Latinoamérica, Nintendo’s distributor in South America, will cease Brazilian operations at the end of the month.
The reason is blamed on high taxes and tariffs that the Brazilian government places on goods. Just for some perspective, the PS4 launched in Brazil with a hefty price tag of $1,845. Sony blamed 60% of the cost on taxes and tariffs.
According to Director and General Manager of Latin America at Nintendo of America, Bill van Zyl, Nintendo hasn’t given up on Brazil.
“Brazil is an important market for Nintendo and home to many passionate fans but unfortunately challenges on the local business environment have made our current distribution model unsustainable in the country.”
Working together with the Juegos de Video Latinoamérica, we will monitor the evolution of the business environment and evaluate the best way to serve our Brazilian fans in the future.”
Obviously Nintendo fans in Brazil haven’t taken too kindly to the news and started a #Nintendocometobrazil campaign on Twitter.
