Nintendo’s First Cross-buy Title is Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars
Nintendo have famously shied away from cross-buy promotions across their range of devices in the past. That has come to an end with the reveal of their first such endeavor, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars.
Revealed during this week’s Nintendo Direct, the latest Mario vs. Donkey Kong title will be hitting the Wii U and 3DS this March, and will be available for free download on one device once already purchased on the other.
The game, which hits the US on March 5, followed by Europe on March 20, will retail for $19.99. As always, you’ll be tasked with guiding mini-Mario toys to the exit door in a number of increasingly difficult puzzle/platformer-style levels.
Players can also create their own levels to share with others using the in-built level creator. The name “Tipping Stars” indicates the new way in which players can “tip” creators of the user-generated puzzles with stars. These stars can then be used by the creators to buy new parts in the level creator.
Here’s the official word on the cross-buy promotion from Nintendo:
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars will be available directly from Nintendo eShop for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS on [5th March US, 20th March Europe, 21st March in Australia]. As a bonus, players who purchase the Wii U version will receive a free download code for the Nintendo 3DS version, and vice versa.

I’ve actually never played one of these games, but the fact that this is cross buy is making me more likely to check it out. I’d probably end up buying it on 3DS initially. Seems more fitting.
