For those of you who are fans of comic books and the Avengers you know that Captain America is everything a man wants to be; noble, smart, dedicated, and down right awesome. There is a feeling that Captain America is a real man’s hero. While playing Captain America: Super Soldier on the Wii I did not feel like a man but a small child.

Captain America: Super Soldier is loosely based on the upcoming movie as you follow the Captain on his quest to defeat HYDRA’s evil plan and go toe-to-toe with the Red Skull. The game is really straightforward, so straightforward it may not even take any skill. An arrow guides the Captain where to go at all times, traversing platforms and obstacles take no skill or aim at all, even the fighting mechanics are simple, mindless button mashing.

The developers for Captain America, High Voltage, decided to stay away from their popular Wii engine, the Quantum3, and settle for more cartoony simple graphics. In fact the Captain looks like he just walked off the Blitz football field. For cartoony graphics, Captain America was not so bad, in fact I grew to enjoy it a litte. The graphics would appeal to kids…but wait we are men and we want a manly Captain!

Captain America controls remind me a little of Batman Arkham Asylum’s controls. There are really only two buttons you need to know. The A button that produces random punches and kicks, then the Z button that is used to counter an attack of the opponent.  You can also throw the Captain’s shield at opponents by pointing the Wii-mote where you want the shield to go. This can become cumbersome if you are quickly switching between attacking enemies while the camera flies around.

Captain America does have a few tricks up his red, white and blue, sleeves that can help him battle the Red Skull. Throughout the game, Captain has the ability to gather experience stars. These stars can be gathered by defeating enemies, breaking crates and by finding hiding objects throughout the levels.  The experience gathered can be used to purchase three levels of categories. The first being the ability to open up different Captain attacks which seem to all occur after stringing together more than 8 combos. Then you have the ability to update the Captain’s shield like giving it the ability to hurt enemies or collect items with a single toss. The last level has to deal with the Captain’s focus. This focus gives you the ability to walk into a room, turn on the focus mode by holding down the C button, select the amount of objects or enemies which correspond to how many focus stars the Captain has, then toss the shield at them to stun them or inflict damage. What happens all depends on how updated the Captain has become.

Overall Captain America: Super Solider for the Wii is a mediocre game. There is some delight found in playing the game; the voice acting is nice, there are a few hidden challenge missions that are nicely difficult, but all that enjoyment ends after a few levels of playing. The game does not have enough to hold the attention of the player throughout the whole game, especially a player like myself with ADD.
