Ronimo Games (creator of de Blob) was kind enough to send me, via Wii gift, Swords and Soldiers for WiiWare. Swords and Soldiers could be the best game since World of Goo to come to Wiiware.  Which honestly isn’t saying too much, but trust me this game is good.

Swords and Soldiers is an RTS type game, where the player has to mine for resources, like gold, and build up your magic bar for special attacks by basically waiting for it to build up. Some of the special attacks you use; shooting lightning from the sky to fry your enemies, using a healing beam to…well heal your units, and a blizzard to freeze your enemies, just to name a few.

Unlike other RTS games, after you build your units they basically forget about the person who created them and do their own thing. Miners mine, soldiers just start walking across the map until they die or they reach the end, which means the stage is done. This may seem a little annoying and dumb, but there is so much going on, and things to do, that it’s a little relief not having to worry about every single unit.

There are different modes to play in Swords and Soldiers. The first mode is the campaign mode that consists of 3 different campaigns as Vikings, Aztec and Chinese. With each group with their own special abilities; Vikings are Strong, Aztec have magical power and Chinese, a little of both. Each campaign consists of ten levels with different missions; protect your fort, capture the enemy base, destroy all the enemy’s on the map.

There is also a Skirmish mode where players just work on clearing the map of enemies. Then there is a Challenge mode, where the player is set to do a different task with different challenges built in. I know that sounds a little vague, I did not have a chance to spend that much time with this. There is also a multiplayer mode, where you can play with another friend, using another Wiimote, and see who is the better player. This mode is done with a horizontal split screen.

Conclusion:

A Ronimo game has had two big hits back to back, with de Blob and now Swords and Soldiers.  If you are looking for a Wiiware game to add to your SD card, yes assuming you are out of room on your Wii like me, and you like strategy driven RTS games, then Swords and Soldiers is the game for you.

I give Swords and Soldiers a 9/10.
