Interrogation: You Will Be Deceived is a simulation, adventure, strategy, role-playing game. Have you ever wanted to be a detective, but your love for video games distracted you from being able to do so? Well, now is your chance. But is this game worth your time and hard-earned money? Let’s investigate.
I’ll start this out by clearing one thing up right away; if you are looking for a visual novel, this game is not for you. If you’re in need of a gritty detective story, then keep reading. The game does have what is called a Visual Novel difficulty. Still, it minimizes the conversational gameplay into a more guided dialogue than the other two methods of difficulty: Detective and Interrogation. Detective is slightly more difficult to navigate confessions than Visual Novel. Interrogation is the most difficult. Both Detective and Interrogation allow for more gritty gameplay.
You play as an unnamed and unseen Detective. Your goal is to stop a terrorist group along the way of solving murders, thefts, and other crimes—the basis of the game centers around the interrogation of each suspect. First things first, you read the files of the crime to get the details of the incident, then you read each of the suspect’s bios. Your goal is to get information from suspects by using threats, manipulation, and even torture. Bodily reactions are used as tools to determine if the interrogation is working by looking at the heart rate to determine how scared the suspect is or the pupils of the eyes to tell how open they are to talking about a subject. Interrogations can go any way, as each suspect is different. Treating them like a friend at times may get you what you need to know, whereas the next subject may take some more aggressive tactics.
While each interrogation is different, there are other things that you have to keep in mind when trying to solve a case. Sometimes, you’re on a time limit, so more aggressive tactics must be used—things like intimidation or torture. However, using a choice like intimidation can call into question your morals and the police department’s integrity. Keeping the department looking good in the eyes of the public is also a goal of the game. There are ways around this—like stopping the tape recorder— but that still raises questions. The addition of keeping the police department in good terms with the public was an interesting twist and made the game a bit more interesting.
The visuals are not anything special, as they are 2D black and white. It’s suggested in the beginning that you wear a pair of headphones for the best experience, but I didn’t really notice too much of a difference either way.
Interrogation: You Will Be Deceived will keep you guessing, and it’s rather enjoyable to play through. There are times when an interrogation goes wrong and has to be restarted. Luckily, there is an option to do so in the pause menu.
That about wraps this investigation, Interrogation: You Will Be Deceived is no longer a suspect to being a bad game. Multiple levels of difficulty allow for multiple playthroughs. The Visual Novel is interesting enough for players who just want the story, while the other two difficulties add a bit of twists and turns to the already enjoyable game. Interrogation: You Will Be Deceived certainly is with the asking price of $12.99.
