REDMOND, Wash., Jan. 17, 2008 – Nintendo DS™ and Wii™ finished strong in 2007, commanding sales in the holiday shopping period and finishing the year as the two best-selling video game systems in the United States, according to new data just released by the independent NPD Group. Nintendo DS was the top-selling U.S. system of 2007, with nearly 8.5 million sold, including more than 4 million in November and December alone. Wii placed second, with nearly 6.3 million sold through the year, more than 2.3 million of which sold in the final two months.
“By the end of 2007 we were sold out of virtually all hardware, and much of our stock of software and accessories was sold out as well, thanks to the broad appeal of Wii and Nintendo DS to core gamers, women, families, grandparents – and seemingly everyone in between,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “And that momentum continues here in the early weeks of 2008.”
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (January 16, 2008) – XGen Studios Inc., acclaimed developer of browser-based games, revealed today that it is an authorized developer for Wii™, Nintendo’s home console. XGen Studios is developing an original title for Nintendo’s upcoming WiiWare™ service, slated for release alongside the platform in Early 2008.
XGen’s upcoming WiiWare title is inspired by an existing cult classic from the studio, and will allow up to 4 simultaneous players while leveraging the unique capabilities of the Wii Remote™. “We’re thrilled to announce that the classic game play enjoyed by Millions is coming to your living room in the form of a new title with compelling additions,” said Skye Boyes, president, XGen Studios, Inc. “We’re taking advantage of the creative freedom afforded by WiiWare to bring fans a captivating co-op game, with great competitive elements and irresistibly charming art direction.”
Konami unveils further information on all-new bespoke PES 2008 for Nintendo system
Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced a late March release date for its eagerly-awaited PES 2008 for Wii™.
Created specifically to make full use of the Wii’s unique control system, PES 2008 brings all the realism of Pro Evolution Soccer to the Nintendo machine, but with a more ‘team-orientated’ control system. The Wii game mirrors the real sport’s use of open space and the exploitation of defensive lapses and accurate passes essential in creating scoring opportunities. The Wii version of PES 2008 expands on these elements, with the use of the Nunchuck and Wii Remote controllers giving the player control over both the player on the ball, and those around him.
Using a point and drag system, the player uses the Wii Remote to guide the player with the ball, and perform all the skill moves and close control with subtle movements of their hand. Instantly, the Wii Remote is used to point at nearby players to select them to receive a pass or to latch on to a through-ball. The Remote can also be used to steer the run of the receiving player, giving extra control as they thread through masses of defenders or run into open space.
Whilst the sales weren’t as high as I hoped, other titles for Wii aren’t selling so well either. Only Nintendo titles are doing well. …
