SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec 17, 2007: Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq:ATVI) was the #1 U.S. console and handheld publisher for the first eleven months of calendar 2007, according to The NPD Group. The company increased its market share for the eleven month period to a record 16.8%, a 7.9% increase over the same period last year.
For the month of November, Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock and Call of Duty 4TM: Modern WarfareTM were the #1 and #2 best-selling titles respectively in dollars across all platforms, according to The NPD Group. Activision also had five of the top-10 best-selling games in dollars, including Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the Xbox 360TM video game and entertainment system and the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock for the PlayStation® 2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and the WiiTM home video game system. Thursday 13th December/…MCV, the leading trade publication for the videogames industry, has today published the results of its annual independent retailer survey – with the release of Halo 3 being lauded as the best single moment in 2007.Microsoft claimed a triple-whammy, as the publisher was voted the best in terms of overall quality and attitude throughout the year. In addition, Xbox 360 is considered the format to win the next generation battle, with 49 per cent of the vote. PlayStation 3 came second – with 35 per cent – and Wii third with 16 per cent of the vote. It’s probably no coincidence that the Nintendo format’s notoriously tight supply issues was voted the biggest disappointment of the year.
The independents’ biggest concern is the supermarkets – their increased market share was specified by 62 per cent as the biggest problem facing games retailers at the moment. Discounting on new releases – often driven by the same supermarkets – came second in the list of greatest concerns, with 28 per cent of the vote.
Despite this, 85 per cent of stores reported being confident about their business in 2008 – a huge endorsement on the games industry, which continues to generate more and more revenues year by year.
“It’s software, not hardware, which provides a continual revenue stream for UK retail, so it’s no surprise that one of the year’s most celebrated games proved to be the independents’ highpoint,” says Neil Long, editor, MCV. “Of greater concern are the more general supply issues which not only impact takings, but disappoint customers. But despite this, the outlook looks incredibly positive.”

Fishing Master and Sports Island mark first titles to emerge from Konami Digital Entertainment/Hudson Soft deal
Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced the first titles to emerge from its recent publishing agreement with Hudson Soft. Fishing Master and Sports Island have both been created specifically for the Wii™ and will be released in Q1 and Q2 2008 respectively.
Fishing Master makes full use of the motion-sensitive Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers, and is a fun simulation allowing users to test their angling skills as they attempt to catch over 100 species of fish. Players use the Wii Remote to cast their line, aiming for the silhouettes of fish in the game’s beautifully-realised lakes. With the line cast, the Nunchuk is then used to reel in any catches by rotating the analogue stick. However, with the fish putting up valiant fights to get free, careful movement of the Remote is needed to counter their thrashing movements.
Fishing Master boasts a wealth of gameplay modes, with a Tutorial easing users into the intricacies of the game, while solo anglers can opt to earn points by catching rare fish and ultimately receiving the esteemed Fishing Master accolade, or can attempt to catch every species in the game to complete a graphic Fish Encyclopedia. Certain quests and special tournaments offer fishing further variety and let you explore new areas rich in fish. Four players can also compete simultaneously in the game’s multi-player mode, each attempting catch bigger and rare fish than their rivals!
