After a great year for science fiction as a genre in 2011, the trend for great futuristic blockbusters looks set to continue with a great line up for 2012.

Following on from the success of the Twilight Saga, The Hunger Games is another adaptation of a successful young adult novel. Due for release in March, the film focuses on the story of Katniss Everdeen, who takes the place of her younger sister when she is chosen to participate in the titular Games, contests in which 12 girls and 12 boys from each of the 12 Districts in the land are forced to compete to the death. The dystopian setting of a ruined United States and the darker themes of the novel suggest that this film may be similar in tone to the most recent Twilight film, Breaking Dawn.

Returning to the genre that made his name for the first time in several years, Ridley Scott is back on board the Alien franchise with the upcoming prequel/sequel/who knows, Prometheus. With a stellar cast lined up including Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender, anticipation couldn’t be higher for this epic science fiction feature. Information and teasers are thin on the ground, so there’s a great deal of speculation concerning what we’ll actually see when Prometheus hits cinemas this June.

Finally, a film that has to be mentioned if we’re talking about anticipation is, of course, the culmination of Chris Nolan’s reboot of the Batman franchise. Having gotten off the ground with the impressive Batman Begins and taken things to a whole new level with The Dark Knight, Nolan is set to conclude his saga with The Dark Knight Rises. Due for release in July, this film is set eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, and Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham to encounter two familiar faces from the comic book mythology – Selina Kyle, otherwise known as Catwoman, and Bane.
