The Wii U, normally relegated to a humble sixth position in the weekly Japanese sales charts, has topped the charts this week, thanks to the release of two popular titles.

The Wii U’s usual average of about 7000 sales has tripled this week, with almost 23,000 sales, making it the best-selling console. The sales were due to the release of two JRPG titles, traditionally very popular in Japan, namely the latest Xenoblade Chronicles and Dragon Quest entries, which sold about 85,000 and 99,000 units, respectively.

Despite the high sales for those two titles, they were both beaten by a 3DS title, namely Puzzle & Dragons, which was the top-selling title with almost 180,000 sales. No surprise there, since the mobile version of the game was a huge success in Japan, and the 3DS has consistently been a strong seller in the region.
