It’s Monday and that means it’s time to discover what’s coming to the European eShop this week. It’s a huge week, with new Mario games on both 3DS and Wii U (Mario Party and Paper Mario, respectively), some classic RPG adventures on Virtual Console, and plenty more besides.

Wii U Retail Download

  • Paper Mario: Color Splash (Nintendo, €49.99 / £39.99) – the latest in this fun and quirky series is the first to be in HD. The series is well-known for its humor as well as excellent turn-based action, and this one introduces a new paint mechanic. Our review will be along shortly but our first impressions were very favorable. Available from 7th October.

Wii U eShop

  • ACT IT OUT! A Game of Charades (Snap Finger Click, €9.99 / £8.99) – based on the classic Charades party game where you have to help others guess words, phrases or names, with this version allowing a drawing element via the touchscreen.
  • Ninja Pizza Girl (Disparity Games, €8.99 / £7.99) – a 2D runner with a difference, here the health gauge is instead replaced with a system that judges how stylishly you can deliver pizzas. Mistakes result in taunts from bullies, adding a social awareness element to the mix.
  • PING 1.5+ (NAMI TENTOU MUSHI, €4.49 / £3.99) – a simple premise offering over 100 increasingly difficult levels in which you aim to shoot a cube through said levels.
  • PSIBO (NAMI TENTOU MUSHI, €4.49 / £3.99) – this retro-inspired title includes an endless mode after a campaign of fighting through hexagonal defense systems.
  • VRog (ByteRockers’ Games, €2.49 / £2.20 until 20th October, then €4.99 / £4.49) – this is touted as a virtual reality experience, in which you play from a frog’s perspective as you catch bugs in arcade and survival modes.

Wii U Virtual Console

  • WarioWare Smooth Moves (Nintendo, €19.99 / £17.99) – originally released in 2006, this was one of the early Wii games. As a party game, it’s full of quick and humorous minigames that continue the quirky, quickfire action of the series.

The free ‘Guest’ download allows groups to enjoy the complete multiplayer experience with only one player owning a full copy of the game. Available from 7th October.

  • Mario Party: Star Rush – Party Guest (Nintendo, free) – As long as one of the players has a full copy of the main game, this allows a group of up to four to enjoy full local multiplayer for free.
  • Epic Word Search Holiday Special (Lightwood Games, €7.99 / £5.99) – more hidden words to find in this holiday-themed version of the game, including Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day.
  • PixelMaker (Nostatic Software, $2.99 / CAD$3.49) – produce scenes of pixel art and share them with the world on Miiverse.

New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console

  • Breath of Fire (Capcom, €7.99 / £7.19, or €3.99 / £3.59 until 20th October if you own Breath of Fire II on New 3DS) – one of the many classic RPGs heralding from the golden age of the SNES, this one was originally released in 1993 in Japan, 1994 in the US but not until 2001 on the Game Boy Advance in Europe. Here you play as hero Ryu, who has the ability to transform into a powerful beast.
  • Breath of Fire II (Capcom, €7.99 / £7.19, or €3.99 / £3.59 until 20th October if you own Breath of Fire on New 3DS) – the sequel to the above was released in Europe in 1996 on the SNES (1995 in the US and 1994 in Japan). This time, you play as an orphan named Ryu, also able to transform. The game is set 500 years after the events of the first game.
