Nintendo has released another system update for the 3DS. Despite bringing the system to a new version 8.0.0, this is a relatively minor update in terms of noticeable differences, providing further improvements to overall system stability.

For comparison, previous major version updates have provided bigger jumps in functionality:

  • 7.0.0 introduced support for Nintendo Network IDs
  • 6.0.0 allowed save files for downloadable games and Virtual Console titles to be backed up to SD card
  • 5.0.0 brought sleep mode downloading to the eShop and the Save Data Transfer Tool for moving save files from physical games to their download counterparts.

This could mean that something big is on the way with future updates to version 8, such as the promise of eShop purchases from other devices like your PC or smartphone. Let the speculation begin!

In the meantime, let us know if you’ve updated your 3DS to enjoy the greater stability.
