A green challenge for the world’s largest dev community

YoYo Games have announced their fourth $1000 casual game development competition, the last of 2008. While they’re still hoping for a huge haul of great games the competition’s the focus has changed slightly. This time YoYo has asked its developers to create games to “Save the Planet”. Or rather, games which address environmental issues.

“We’re often told that the only solution to these collective problems is mass action – the message must be spread to as many as people as possible if our own environmental compromises are to count for anything.” Said Sandy Duncan, CEO of YoYo Games “Computer games are a great way to reach young people and get them interacting with these important debates.”

Hoffman Estates, IL – September 17, 2008 – High Voltage Software, Inc., one of the world’s largest independent video game developers, officially announced today that they are accepting fan-created control mappings for their first-person action shooter, The Conduit. The game will debut exclusively for the Nintendo® Wii™ in the first quarter of 2009.

The idea started as a simple conversation within the development team. The team’s Lead Programmer, Ed Federmeyer, suggested the idea of letting gamers themselves offer up some other possibilities and then take the best to build into the game as extra preset controller configurations.

“Given how flexible our control scheme code is, and how we’re going to have several pre-set mappings to choose from…” said Federmeyer, “Wouldn’t it be a cool contest to allow gamers to propose schemes and we can take the best and burn them into the game as additional preset control mappings?”

KEY INFORMATION

In a fictional near future, Washington D.C. is shaken by several strange events resulting in heightened local and national tensions. John Adams, the enigmatic leader of a shadow organization known as the Trust, realizes that the nation’s capital has come under attack by an alien race called the Drudge. A former Secret Service agent, codenamed “Mr. Ford”, is recruited to learn the origins of this attack. The answer Mr. Ford finds is not the one he expects.
The Conduit is a straightforward First Person Shooter (FPS) in the style of Halo, MOH: Heroes 2, and Resistance: Fall of Man. Players battle enemy forces in a highly detailed 3D world using a dynamic control scheme only possible on the Wii.
