We reported last year on Nintendo’s decision to block, then ultimately allow, the streaming of Smash Bros. Melee during the EVO annual fighting tournament. Over 130,000 people went on to watch the Melee portion of the finals, making it one of the most watched fighting games in history.

With that in mind, everyone is speculating on the role of Smash Bros. during the 2014 event. Nintendo had this to say to SRK:

While we are engaged in preliminary discussions with Evo about their upcoming event in July, the potential role of any Nintendo software at this event is undetermined at this time.

With new title Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U looming on the horizon, and given last year’s success, it seems that Nintendo’s popular franchise could only benefit from the exposure of this event. SRK remains cautiously optimistic, saying that “we still have room in our lineup for Smash”. Fingers crossed, then.

Do you think Nintendo will allow Smash Bros. to play a role at this year’s EVO? Let us know in the comments below.
