Anyone with a mobile device has likely heard the name Gameloft, especially if they’re also racing fans. It’ll come as good news, then, that the company has announced the latest entry in their award-winning racing franchise—Asphalt 9: Legends—is coming to Nintendo Switch later this summer.

Before you cry out “Not another mobile port!” you need to consider that the Asphalt series has provided console-quality gameplay on mobile devices for years, and that this isn’t the first time an Asphalt game has appeared on a Nintendo Device. For that, we have to go all the way back to Asphalt: Urban GT on Nintendo DS in 2004. It’s also not Gameloft’s first release for the Nintendo Switch, follwoing Modern Combat Blackout released in February of this year.

In Asphalt 9: Legends, players will collect and unlock nearly 60 world-famous licensed hypercars and tracks in the single-player campaign, with new content being rolled out similarly to the mobile and PC version of the games. Multiplayer supports up to eight players in online play or four players in local split-screen mode. Split-screen functionality allows players to race on one of 42 tracks against up to three local opponents with the new offline gameplay mode.

In addition to offline split-screen play, Asphalt 9: Legends will also come with some new features unique to the Switch edition.

Players will also find the series’ acclaimed arcade racing gameplay tailored to fit the Nintendo Switch, allowing for a variety of play styles, using Joy-Con™, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller™, gyroscopic motion controls, touch screen controls, or the innovative Touchdrive™, a fresh approach to driving controls that adds a layer of strategic decision to the sheer fun of the ride.

The Switch version does, however, come with mobile-style pricing. The game will be free to download, and whereas you can unlock all content without making an in-game purchase, players will need to buy the “Asphalt 9: Legends Starting Racer Pack” to unlock supercars and resources to boost progress and to challenge friends and family in split-screen multiplayer right from the beginning.

More information on Asphalt 9: Legends for the Nintendo Switch will be announced later this year. Pure Nintendo is scheduled to meet with Gameloft at E3 2019, and we’ll be sure to relay our experience with the game.
