Lighthouses, horses, space shuttles, and love.

Originally released in 2011, the story-driven RPG To the Moon is getting a Nintendo Switch release on January 16th. To celebrate the pending arrival, Freebird Games and X.D. Network have just released the launch trailer…and it’s pretty spectacular.

Fans of the game may recognize that the new trailer is simply a remake of the original Steam trailer, highlighting the redrawn graphics. It also serves to set up the game’s premise, which is pretty captivating:

Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts have peculiar jobs: They give people another chance to live, all the way from the very beginning… but only in their patients’ heads.

Due to the severity of the operation, the new life becomes the last thing the patients remember before drawing their last breath. Thus, the operation is only done to people on their deathbeds, to fulfill what they wish they had done with their lives, but didn’t.

This particular story follows their attempt to fulfill the dream of an elderly man, Johnny. With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny’s past is revealed. As the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned a life time, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is.

And Johnny’s last wish is, of course…to go to the moon

I gotta say, I have no idea what my wish would be. Maybe to put that $5,000 severance pay check into Apple stock when it was trading at around $14 a share instead of making a down payment on a Honda Civic, but that doesn’t really make for a good story.

Originally praised for its narrative and beautiful use of music and retro graphics, the developers of the remake hope to recreate that sense of wonder, calling it “the gaming equivalent of a fine espresso—a tight execution with zero filler.” To the Moon for Nintendo Switch will feature:

  • A unique, story-driven experience with no combat
  • An innovative mix of adventure game elements and classic RPG aesthetics
  • The acclaimed original soundtrack that closely ties to the story

To the Moon will make its console debut in the Nintendo eShop switch on January 16th for $11.99. For the first two weeks, however, a 20% discount will be offered. For more information, visit freebirdgames.com.
