One thing that’s noticeably absent from the Nintendo Switch is any sort of video-streaming service, such as Netflix or Hulu. That’s about to change, in Japan at least, with the release of Niconico.

Niconico is a Japanese video-sharing website, similar to YouTube. It features a distinctive layer of user comments over the streaming video, and gaming companies in the region often use the service for announcements and events.

The listing for Niconico suggests that companies could publish apps directly to the Switch eShop outside of major system updates, which could mean other services are on their way.

In the meantime, Niconico will be available in the Japanese eShop from Thursday, July 13th. Let us know your thoughts on Niconico’s launch.
