Nintendo has just released a new app on the Google Play store in Japan, which also includes a free Virtual Console game.

The app, titled “Easy Tethering for Nintendo 3DS”, allows the tethering of a 3DS to your smartphone, basically turning your Android-powered smartphone into a wireless access point for the 3DS.

Initially, the app is supported only with the Samsung Galaxy S5, with more devices being added over the next month. Users must be on the NTT DoCoMo network, the prevailing mobile phone carrier in Japan. Upcoming phone and tablet support includes:

Smartphone:

  • Galaxy S5 SC-04F
  • Xperia ™ Z2 SO-03F
  • AQUOS ZETA SH-04F
  • ARROWS NX F-05F
  • Xperia ™ A2 SO-04F

Tablets:

  • AQUOS PAD SH-06F
  • Xperia ™ Z2 Tablet SO-05F

Users will download the app then use the WPS security standard to link their 3DS to the internet via one of the supported devices.

Another incentive for potential users is the proposition of a still-unknown free game. Users who download the app and fill out a survey before September 30, 2014, will receive a free Virtual Console game.

Let us know whether this is something you would use if released in your territory.
