Our Featured Artist of the week is the awesome Melanie Coleman. She’s a huge fan of ‘the Legend of Zelda’ series and uses that passion to create beautiful artwork inspired by the game. She is an amazing artist of all different varieties and is always up for doing commissions. Besides being an illustrator Melanie also cofounded an independent Music/Arts Promotional & Design Company based in Mississauga, Ontario with her husband. So if you have an idea that you want brought to life, or just some quality artwork Melanie’s contact info will be at the bottom of the interview for anyone who is interested. Enjoy!

KD: How long have you been an illustrator?

MC: I’ve been a pro-illustrator for 8 years now, however I’ve been drawing all of my life! I knew I wanted to be an artist when I was 8 years old so I stuck with it. I remember staying up so late in the night as a tween/teen just obsessively drawing original things or comics and video game characters….Lots of fun!

KD: What’s your favorite type of artwork to create? What inspires you?

MC: I love creating storytelling pieces, having a character in the middle of a moment and we are all just quietly watching. For me, the intimacy of that idea really fulfills me as an Artist! Everything inspires me, it could be something in a dream,  or something my husband says. There is always so many wonderful things around me that fuel my creative juices! Sometimes it gets to be too much. You have all these great ideas but such little time to do them all!

We also love to use our abilities and provide clients the best products with the greatest quality at a budget-friendly cost! KD: What are some of your most memorable projects you’ve worked on?

MC: I’m sure it sounds corny, but every project has been an amazing chapter in my life! It’s honestly hard to pick and choose, I’ve had the privilege of working with a lot of truly talented people by my side. The way I look at it is this, as long as I’m able and get the opportunity to work on an art piece, or a film, anything…I’m the luckiest gal alive. Not many people can say that!

KD: Do you create mostly digital artwork? What’s your favorite program to use when illustrating?

MC: I doodle a lot with pen and paper, it’s usually how the madness begins! I do favour digital a lot because of the convenience of it all! (I’m a little lazy and hate cleaning up…I’m sure my Mom is reading this and shaking her head (HI MOM!). I do LOVE to paint traditionally…but that requires a LOT of downtime that I unfortunately don’t have too much of…and the cleaning…LOL. The programs that I love using are Adobe Photoshop CC and Corel Painter 12! You get such a wide variety of brushes and over all perks from the two that is just a MUST for all artists.

KD: You obviously love the Legend of Zelda series, as do I. What are some of your other favorite video game titles or series?

MC: It’s that obvious! Hahaha…Yes I confess, I’m a hardcore Zeldalite! Oh boy! Wish I could go in and actually type all of them down! It just wouldn’t be fair to anyone if I did that! Off the top of my head my ultimate fangirl list would be: Zelda, Resident Evil (because zombies are just a win!), Street Fighter, Silent Hill, Metal Gear and Super Mario. Again it’s just such a crime to leave other games behind… but just know that I love you.
