Space Crew is a very interesting game. Its charming visuals don’t truly convey just how much the game will hand your butt to you. It’s hard, brutal, unforgiving, and yet somehow retains a good amount of fun. The Legendary Edition said “Hey, what if we added even more to the game but kept it just as brutal?” While the game is not completely balanced, and at times feels unfair, Space Crew: Legendary Edition is enough fun that I can recommend it, as long as challenging space sims are the type of game you’re looking.
In our original Space Crew review, we said: “You will learn to use every trick your crew can perform to survive, or you will die over and over and over again as I did. Even with no room for error, I still found Space Crew fun, making me want to beat its missions just to spite it. Take away the simple nonexistent storyline, and you’re left with a challenging and reasonably enjoyable space SIM. You’ll either love it or hate it.”
With Space Crew: Legendary Edition, you’re getting the base game plus a brand new campaign, new Away Team missions and new Legendary Crew members. All in all for $25, you’re getting quite a bit of new content. If you previously owned Space Crew, then this Legendary Edition is completely free. Ultimately the same issues we mentioned in our original review exist in the Legendary Edition.
Space Crew: Legendary Edition is still very hard, which is part of the point of the game. Yes, there is a difficulty scale that brings it down a bit. Yet, there were instances when things went really wrong and, rather than seeing a clear answer as to why, I was simply frustrated that I didn’t know what happened. Granted, the level of details you control in the game is quite impressive. Every decision is up to you. Yet I found this to be part of the problem. I had so many things to do, so many decisions to make, that at times I completely forgot what I was supposed to do and died.
The thing is, Space Crew: Legendary Edition still has its moments of fun. When you wrap your mind around the difficulty and all the tasks you need to do, there’s a fun sim underneath. You do truly feel like you’re creating your own crew and ship and setting off on your own unique adventure. With the Legendary Edition’s new content, you’ve got plenty of content to keep you busy.
Ultimately, for me, Space Crew: Legendary Edition falls into the category of “certain type of game for a certain type of player.” If you haven’t played a challenging space sim before or aren’t quite as familiar with them, then I really don’t think Space Crew is for you. It’s hard, with lots of systems you need to understand and control. It’s very unforgiving, despite how the game might look at first. However, if you’re someone who loves challenging space sims and are looking for something new to play on your Nintendo Switch, then Space Crew: Legendary Edition is likely a game you’ll enjoy.
