Mastiff Wants to Feed the Gaming World!

By  •  April 8, 2008

Win Gift Certificates for Burgers, Hotdogs, Pizza and More at the Major League Eating: The Game Website

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. – April 7, 2008
Video game publisher Mastiff announced today its plan to feed the video gaming world – or at least a small part of it. Mastiff will honor each of the 12 foods found in its upcoming WiiWare exclusive release, Major League Eating: The Game with a weekly drawing. Each week, Mastiff will select a ‘food of the week’ and hold a drawing for gift certificates for that event, uh, ‘food.’ Anyone can enter – even if you don’t own a Wii. Starting April 7, 2008, gamers can head to www.MLEGAME.com to register and (hopefully) win. Even better, Mastiff promised not to force feed you your prize if you do win.

“Professional gurgitory athletics is more than a hobby, more than a sport, more than a way of life. It’s an encapsulation of mankind’s history and struggle. Every drop of saliva, every bite, every postural tilt of the epiglottis and relaxation of the esophageal sphincter symbolizes the tension between mankind’s base nature and the yoke of civilization. While my money is on base nature over civilization, offering free food seemed a civilized thing to do and a great way to hedge my bets” says Bill Swartz, Head Woof at Mastiff.

Occupational Therapists Use Wii For Parkinson’s Study

By  •  April 7, 2008

It’s Ingrid Bell’s turn at bat. She steps up to the plate, awaiting the pitch. A 70-mph fastball soars toward her. She swings and connects with the ball.

Foul ball! Everyone cheers for her anyway.

This baseball game’s not taking place on a field, and there’s no real bat or ball to be seen. Mrs. Bell is playing the Nintendo Wii as part of her occupational therapy. She is among 30 Parkinson’s disease patients participating in a Medical College of Georgia study to determine if occupational therapy enhances the treatment of the disease.

Parkinson’s disease affects daily tasks that people take for granted. Brushing teeth, getting out of bed and walking become a problem for these patients because of dopamine depletion, which results in stiffness or slowing of movement and fine motor dysfunction.

Computer game addicts like people with Aspergers

By  •  April 3, 2008

People who are addicted to playing computer games show some of the same personality traits as people with Aspergers syndrome.

This is the conclusion of Dr John Charlton of the University of Bolton and Ian Danforth of Whitman College, USA. Their results were presented at the British Psychological Society’s Annual Conference in Dublin on the Thursday 3 April 2008.

The researchers questioned 391 computer game players, 86 per cent of whom were male. They considered relationships between addiction, ‘high engagement’ and personality. They found that the closer the players got to addiction the more likely they were to display negative personality traits. And that as players showed more signs of addiction they were increasingly characterised by three personality traits that would normally be associated with Aspergers, a variety of high functioning autism. These were neuroticism, and lack of extraversion and agreeableness.
