There has been some criticism about the quality of titles that Ubisoft has coming. In my opinion, the criticism is almost fully justified.
The true of the matter is this, the Wii is a very different console than what most games developers are used to. The Wii has managed to make a huge success from having games on it that just would not work on a conventional console. The Wii has also managed to increase the market share to a huge group of people that are not that interested in gaming. With Wii Sports, Wii Fit and all manner of games built for family play, Nintendo know who they are marketing for and it is not die hard gamers. If you look at the most successful Wii games, they are not amazing new AAA games, they are predominantly family orientated games/alternative games.
Kind of a long read, but hey you have all weekend.
Led by the PlayStation 2 (PS2), the “128-bit” generation of video game systems has reached a record global installed base that is expected to exceed 180 million units. Of course, the PS2 was the best-selling game system ever.
With high hardware prices and a slow start for most of the current generation of game systems (Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3), DFC Intelligence had originally forecasted that it would not be until 2012 that the installed base for the current generation started to match that of the 128-bit systems.
However, 2007 was a record year on all fronts, as sales of PC and video games reached an all-time high and overall worldwide industry sales soared over the $50 billion mark. DFC Intelligence forecasts that sales for the current generation of systems will pass the $180 million mark in 2011.

Resistance Is Futile

IT’S O.K. to liken Shigeru Miyamoto to Walt Disney. When Disney died in 1966, Mr. Miyamoto was a 14-year-old schoolteacher’s son living near Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital. An aspiring cartoonist, he adored the classic Disney characters. When he wasn’t drawing, he made his own toys, carving wooden puppets with his grandfathers’ tools or devising a car race from a spare motor, string and tin cans.
Even as he has become the world’s most famous and influential video-game designer — the father of Donkey Kong, Mario, Zelda and, most recently, the Wii — Mr. Miyamoto still approaches his work like a humble craftsman, not as the celebrity he is to gamers around the world.
Perched on the end of a chair in a hotel suite a few dozen stories above Midtown Manhattan, the preternaturally cherubic 55-year-old Mr. Miyamoto radiated the contentment of someone who has always wanted to make fun. And he has. As the creative mastermind at Nintendo for almost three decades, Mr. Miyamoto has unleashed mass entertainment with a global breadth, cultural endurance and financial success unsurpassed since Disney’s fabled career.

Wii™ emerged as the top-selling console in April, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks U.S. video game sales. Wii sold more than 714,000 units in April alone, bringing its lifetime sales in the United States to more than 9.5 million.
“Wii sales were buoyed in part by the strong launch of Mario Kart Wii, which sold more than 1.1 million units,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Our belief in appealing to a broad, diverse audience of players continues to resonate with consumers, and we look forward to continuing our outreach to an expanded audience with the launch of Wii Fit next week.”
“The fact is that we have put far more product on store shelves worldwide than our competitors. The difference is that in a very short time we have far outpaced …

Update with Official Press Release
Q: How will Defend Your Castle on WiiWare differ from the PC version? How would you convince someone sitting on the wall to buy this as opposed to playing the free Flash version?
Skye Boyes: By taking the game back to the drawing board, we were able to improve upon the original design as well as leverage the unique capabilities of the Nintendo Wii. A new unit type, 4 player cooperative multiplayer, more massive waves of invaders, and significant changes ‘under the hood’ to enhance and extend gameplay are just a few of the improvements over the original. Developing for the Nintendo Wii also allowed us to spawn more massive waves of invaders in later stages and include enhancements such as lighting and particle effects.
Q: Defend Your Castle was always a fantastic pick-up-and-play game whenever boredom gnawed away at the mind, is this still the case or will there be more incentives for replayability?
Skye Boyes: Defend your Castle is still a fantastic cure for brief spouts of boredom and will really appeal to new and old casual players. However, game play has been significantly extended, and Heroic mode presents considerable challenging for even the most hardcore players. Multiple difficulty modes, multiple save slots and, of course, multiplayer, add substantial replay value.
I think America has always been better at creating unique products,” says Miyamoto, the head of Nintendo’s game-development division and creator of Super Mario Bros.
“In Japan, the technology required …

Every weekend it seems like someone gets their hands on that Monday’s VC press release before it even comes out. I have stayed away from it for the reason that we have never seen an actual press release, just a mention of the games that are coming out. With no VC releases this week, because the launch of WiiWare, Nintendo has released a press release to announce the six games that are coming out. From here on out we can probably expect a VC/Wiiware press release announcment every Monday.
REDMOND, Wash., May 12, 2008 – Nintendo’s Wii™ console has already changed the way people play games. Now its new WiiWare™ service decisively tears down limitations for how developers create games – and the way people receive them.
Starting today, Wii owners with an Internet connection can download new, creative games from a wide range of developers, from large publishers to indie shops. By reducing the barriers that make console game development prohibitively expensive, WiiWare showcases original ideas in the most democratic environment in industry history, connecting the people who make games more directly with the people who play them.
WiiWare frees developers from the traditional constraints of video game development. WiiWare lets developers experiment with big ideas and small budgets to the benefit of players everywhere. Newer, smaller teams now have an outlet for their creative ideas. The constantly growing WiiWare library will have a regular flow of unique video gaming experiences consumers might not otherwise have access to.
“WiiWare is to the video game industry what independent films are to Hollywood,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “WiiWare lets developers experiment with new ideas and experiences. Combined with our collection of classic Virtual Console games, Wii provides one-stop shopping for the greatest games of the past – and the future.”
