IGN Nintendo Voice Chat Summary

By  •  April 15, 2008

Media Summit
– Most focus was placed on Wii Fit.

Wii Fit
– Was able to go through a variety of gameplay modes and put the game to the test. Does it work? It certainly does.
– Actually woke up feeling pretty sore the next morning after doing strength contests against Chobot, felt like he had actually done hard strength training.
– Chobot fell flat on her face during the push-ups.
– Wii Balance Board senses and calculates a lot of data. Very accurate.
– As a workout tool, the game is fantastic. The mini-games like the Ski Jump are great fun. The Ski Jump requires careful balance when sliding the slope, making an upwards motion onto your tippy toes for extra height, and still maintaining balance in the air. It’s challenging but really fun.
– Matt’s really feeling it and believes it deserves all the (massive) sales it has already gotten and will continue to get when it launches in Europe and USA.

Mario Kart
– Absolutely flawless online. Blew them away.
– The offline multiplayer drops the ball because it instantly drops to 30fps when splitscreen, and still manages to chug despite not being a very pretty engine. There’s also a lack of free-for-all battle mode.
– Also, the single player mode still hasn’t progressed in any real way. It’s still dull and there’s still flaws like rubber-banding.
– However, the online multiplayer is phenomenal. You go on and are paired up with as many people as possible (12 being the max).
– Had initial issues where he couldn’t connect to the Treehouse development people in Japan, but worked perfectly after that. Absolutely silky-smooth and a lot of fun to play. Lots of stats tracking. Makes the Mario Kart Wii experience.
– Wii’s premier online game.
– New media should hopefully be coming up soon.

SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL SMASHES NINTENDO SALES RECORDS

Wii Game Sells at a Rate of More than 120 per Minute

REDMOND, Wash., March 17, 2008 – After just one week on store shelves, Super Smash Bros.® Brawl for Wii has become the fastest-selling video game in Nintendo of America’s history. Since its launch on March 9, the feature-packed fighting action game has sold more than 1.4 million units in the United States, including more than 874,000 on March 9 alone. It has sold at a rate of more than 120 units per minute between launch and March 16.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural phenomenon,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Game reviewers and the public alike praise its fun game play and extensive, inventive content.”

Super Smash Bros. Brawl features a nearly limitless variety of options for players. Dozens of classic Nintendo characters like Mario™ and Pikachu® are joined by industry icons like Sonic The Hedgehog™ and Metal Gear’s Solid Snake for all-out four-player battles. The endless customization keeps players coming back for more. The previous game in the series, Super Smash Bros.® Melee, became the best-selling Nintendo GameCube™ game of all time with more than 7 million copies sold worldwide, so it’s no surprise to see this latest installment racking up record numbers.

Wired’s NPD Analysis

By  •  March 14, 2008

If all those number from yesterdays NPD release, is making your head spin…No?..me either… Well then you can just check out the Analysis below to find out what the numbers mean to Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.

This month’s NPD results leave us with a lot of unanswered questions, but one thing’s for sure — Nintendo has bounced back nicely from its post-holiday inventory drought. Remember, last month’s numbers brought Wii and DS down within spitting distance of their rivals. Sure, they were still in first place, but it was practically a statistical tie.

But they found their footing in February, and they’re back to selling unbelievable amounts of hardware — especially for this time of year. And Wii’s dominance is only going to continue. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
in March. Mario Kart in April. Wii Fit in May. It’s looking as if Nintendo’s supply situation with Wii isn’t going to resolve itself before 2009, at this point.
