Nintendo’s Wi U exclusive Splatoon was released globally at the end of May. The latest sales data from Japan reveals that the game has sold very well in the country, with almost 145,000 sales in its first week, making it the highest-selling game for that period.

This news is even more impressive given that shooters traditionally sell poorly in Japan. Nintendo has done something right with this new intellectual property, mixing the colorful and fun Nintendo brand with the fast-paced action of a shooting game.

Splatoon’s release also helped boost hardware sales, with Wii U units topping the charts – a rarity in itself – selling over 17,000 units, over double the usual 7000-ish sales per week.

This latest release from Nintendo was revealed during Nintendo’s E3 2014 digital event, and showcases the Big N’s talent for turning a worn-out genre into something new and exciting.

Other Wii U sales highlights include Mario Kart 8 sneaking back into fifth place, with 11,000 sales for the week, pushing it over 1 million lifetime sales in Japan.
