Tetris 99 is about to become even more intense as a fresh update hits the frenzied multiplayer madness. The latest update brings a brand new Team Battle Mode, allowing groups of friends to play together as a squad.

In the new Team Battle Mode, players choose their favorite of four teams. Some teams may end up with many more members, which could be a problem … except that smaller teams receive a special boost in attack power when being attacked. This unexpected element should keep players on their toes.

As players are eliminated, the final team standing with at least one player remaining wins. It’s really a team effort too, with all members of the winning team sharing in the victory. Players who are KO’d early in the game will go into spectator mode, where you can send “Likes” to cheer on teammates. It’s important to stick around, too – once your team is ranked, you’ll earn those XP or event points.

There are more new features available with this latest update, including:

  • new button configuration options
  • new user emblems
  • the option to redeem 30 in-game tickets for some of the elusive Special Themes that were featured during earlier events, including Game Boy Tetris, Splatoon, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and Super Kirby Clash.
  • the addition of password-based matchmaking, making finding and gathering friends for matches easier than ever.

Team Battle Mode will also be available during the next MAXIMUS CUP. The Tetris 99 10th MAXIMUS CUP will run from 11 p.m. PT on Dec. 12 to 10:59 p.m. PT on Dec. 16. It’s available to all Nintendo Switch Online members. Points will be awarded based on placements during each match, and at the end of the event the top 999 players will each win 999 Gold Points that can be used to help purchase games in Nintendo eShop.

The fierce and frenzied 99-person multiplayer matches of the Tetris® 99 game just got even more intense with the addition of Team Battle Mode. Typically, it’s every tenacious Tetrimino twirler for themselves, but now Team Battle Mode allows for a group of friends and competitors to play together as a squad. (Graphic: Business Wire)
