Nintendo revealed some new Mario Maker footage and details at the Game Awards in Las Vegas last night, as shown in the above video.

The footage is presented by the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto himself, after an introduction from Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime.

In the video, Reggie first brings Mario composer Koji Kondo onto the stage, famous for composing the wonderful soundtracks to the many Mario games over the years. Next, Reggie crosses to a video of Miyamoto, who explains that 2015 is the 30th anniversary of the original NES game, Super Mario Bros., making it the perfect year to launch Mario Maker for Wii U

The first thing you’ll see in the new footage is that you can now create levels in four different Mario styles – original Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World or New Super Mario Bros. U.

Next you’ll see Mario play through some new levels, switching between the four styles – and they look amazing, and very simple to create, but challenging to play. In other words, the possibilities are endless.

The music is prominent too, with sounds ranging from classic scores to new themes, which relates back to Reggie’s mention of Kondo on stage in Las Vegas.

This video is a great surprise for fans, and comes alongside another video depicting footage of The Lagend of Zelda, which also featured Miyamoto, this time discussing the latest Zelda entry with series director Eiji Aonuma.

Check out the Mario Maker video above and let us know your thoughts – are you excited about creating levels? Or perhaps more excited about trying levels created and shared by others? It’s a pretty exciting concept, and we can’t wait to hear more about this in the new year.
