Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai has spoken out on which character in the latest version of the game has the lowest win ratio. The answer might surprise you, as it’s none other than boxing champ Little Mac.

Sakurai revealed the news via Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, saying that:

For Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the individual character win ratios lined up nicely in a staircase format, but [for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS] one fighter has a significantly low ratio. It’s Little Mac.

Sakurai continues, describing Little Mac as a fighter with pronounced strengths and weaknesses – his dodge and punch are enhanced but these are overly compensated by a weak jump and a simple back throw. But is this the only reason why players lose more often with Little Mac than any other? Sakurai elaborates:

It appears that the biggest reason for his low win ratio is because people fall under the assumption that ‘Little Mac is strong!’ and all rush to use him only to get pummeled in return.

He gives the impression of being able to win easier than other fighters which leads to more people using him, but in reality, he’s a difficult character to actually continuously win with.

At the end of the day, someone has to be at the bottom of that list, but if the results are skewed it’s good to know that Sakurai is watching and assessing to ensure a fair battle, with closing words:

I believe that averaging out character stats is a bad move in both play and competition.
