NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The hot pursuit of discounted toys and video games kept lots of shoppers waiting in the cold, dark night on Black Friday.
Deals on a Playstation 2 combo, a $50 gift card to go with a black 16-gigabyte iPod nano, a half-priced talking Dora the Explorer and the newest Elmo doll were motivation enough to have excited shoppers bursting through the front door of Toys R Us in the heart of New York City.
The line outside of the flagship toy store in Times Square started forming at 9 p.m. ET Thursday night, eight hours before the store’s doors opened at 5 a.m. Friday.
Ryan Bailey, 20, from New York City, was the first shopper in line at 9 p.m. Thursday night. She arrived at 1 a.m. last year for the doorbuster sale and the line was already very long.
After checking the sales online, Bailey had a shopping list included a Nintendo Wii, an Elmo doll and a pretend kitchen.

PriceGrabber.com(R), a part of Experian, today revealed that economic conditions motivate value-driven consumers which lead to an 11 percent increase in traffic year-over-year on Black Friday. Data from PriceGrabber.com shows that online consumers are taking advantage of promotions on popular electronics including: LCD and Plasma TV’s, Blu-Ray Disc Players, Digital SLR Cameras, Laptops, and Video Game Consoles.
“Prior to the Black Friday weekend, 71 percent of shoppers intended to spend less money this holiday season compared to last year and 66 percent planned to give practical gifts,” said Ron LaPierre, president of PriceGrabber.com. “Thanksgiving and Black Friday traffic shows that value drives consumer spending. 6-Year-Old Girl Designs GameStop’s 2008 Holiday Gift Card
Company Will Donate $1 to Make-A-Wish Foundation for Every Gift Card Purchased
GRAPEVINE, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dallas-area resident Mary McKenzie is helping GameStop raise funds this holiday season for the Make-A-Wish Foundation®. She had the honor of creating artwork for GameStop Corp.’s (NYSE: GME) 2008 holiday gift card. The 6-year-old first grader is a frequent customer of GameStop, the world’s largest video game and entertainment software retailer. Her artwork depicts a colorful holiday scene complete with an angel, snowman, tree and reindeer.
McKenzie often submits her drawings to GameStop staff in the metroplex, so when Chris Olivera, vice president of corporate communications and public affairs at the retailer, heard about her drawings, he knew she would be the perfect person to illustrate this year’s holiday card.
“We were already in the planning stages for a holiday card that would benefit our corporate partner, the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” Olivera said. “I heard about Mary’s love of GameStop and her hope to help grant a wish someday for a child, so we asked her to help us design the card.”
