Zelda has loomed over the gaming scene the past few days, awash with rumors about an High-def remake of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. As a rule, I don’t have any real problems with remakes. And if a title like Twilight Princess can help Nintendo once again, that’ll make me as happy as a reunited Yeto and Yeta. Having said that, this isn’t the remake that I (and I suspect many others) truly want.
Each generation of gaming brings its own trends. One of my concerns about this generation is the trend of remaking titles that aren’t that old to begin with. It feels like a cash grab, really nothing more. Now I’m not saying that’s the case with Twilight Princess – at 9 years of age, it’s on the retro bubble. My point is, I can already play it on my Wii U in Wii mode. Is an HD sheen worth however much Nintendo might charge? If The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD is any indication ($49.99) I’ll be saving my rupees.
Legitimately speaking of course, Wind Waker wasn’t much older than Twilight Princess when it was remade. But it was a GameCube era game, unplayable on modern Nintendo hardware. It also made some cuts I didn’t care for, but now is not the time for that. My point is, GameCube titles seem a much better choice to receive HD treatment. And I think it’s accurate to say that more fans have been asking for them than they have Wii remakes.
Do I remember that Twilight Princess was also a GameCube release? Of course, and I acknowledge it in the spirit of fairness. But far more people played the game on Wii (over 7 million) than they did on GameCube (less than 2 million). Heck, I can still find the Nintendo Selects Twilight Princess on the shelves at Target! If this rumor turns out to be true, isn’t the Wii version the one Nintendo would remake? With things like motion controlled archery, I don’t doubt it.
A Wii U HD wish list has been a recurring topic since Wind Waker HD was first announced. For a long time now it seems Super Mario Sunshine has been at or near the very top of that list. For whatever reason though, Nintendo seems more interested in the Zelda franchise. Its success has been proven with Wind Waker HD, so I understand that. But if Twilight Princess does return, I’d rather see it get the VC treatment – put it on the eShop and let gamers download it if they wish. Or even remake it for the New 3DS. My ultimate preference however, is to see Nintendo save their efforts for other HD remakes, or the new Wii U Zelda game instead.

Twilight Princess is my favourite Zelda title so I would love to see a HD remake. Sure, it’d be great to see other games remastered but a game like Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword are much easier to work with than a game like Super Mario Sunshine.
I don’t agree with your comment on Zelda U because it’s making an assumption that those working on TP Wii U have been taken away from Zelda U development. The chances are they are two different development teams and if TP wasn’t getting the HD treatment, they’d be working on something else that isn’t Zelda U.
I am a little miffed that Nintendo didn’t take Super Mario Galaxy and give it the HD treatment, I would have bought that in a millisecond.

I agree, Twilight Princess would be the easier game to rework. Nintendo already experimented with it prior to WW HD.
I don’t necessarily feel a TP remake is taking people away from Zelda U, but it would mean less people available for the project. Conceivably, it could make a difference as far as delays and such.
Galaxy would look slick in HD!

I’ve checked the Nintendo-Update-Server already and got the icon-database-file for this Game.

You need to decrypt the file by yourself, it isn’t that hard.
I’ve uploaded two images. One of them describes the encryption of this file and the other one shows the decrypted file (which contains strings like “THE LEGEND OF ZELDA Twilight Princess HD”
If you think I’m lying, decrypt the file by yourself.
But you can’t deny that Nintendo already uploaded the Icon-File (short title, long title, author + tga-file) to their servers.

I see where you’re coming from, but I do think Twilight Princess is a good candidate for an HD remake, perhaps more than Wind Waker was, and Super Mario Sunshine is. That’s not to say that neither of the latter games deserve it, but Twilight Princess is essentially a sixth generation game that attempted to go for a darker, and more realistic setting. As such, like other realistic games of its time, it hasn’t aged as well, and could use a visual upgrade more than Wind Waker did. The stylistic design of Wind Waker allowed it to age very well, and visually, there wasn’t THAT much needed for the HD upgrade.
I don’t think Twilight Princess needs to be particularly prioritized for any reason, but the visuals wouldn’t look as nice by today’s standards if it only received a VC release. Also, I don’t think they’d divert resources from their main team to make the HD rerelease. More likely, it’d be handed off to Grezzo (the team that ported Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask to the 3DS, and are currently working on Triforce Heroes)
