By  •  January 24, 2008

Throughout 2007 the Nintendo DS and Wii have both seen strong hardware and software sales, as people of all ages across Europe embraced the pick up and play nature of the consoles and titles released.

The phenomenal interest in Wii, with its innovative Wii Remote and interactive titles, has lead to over 6 million consoles flying off the shelves in Europe since its launch in December 2006. The unprecedented popularity of the console has also seen four first party Wii titles; Wii Play, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Party 8 and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, each sell in excess of over one million units across Europe and provide complete entertainment for the whole family.

IGN Wiik In Review Summary

By  •  January 11, 2008

SUMMARY

– Matt’s new beard was grown because he likes to grow a beard when he puts on weight during christmas to confirm his weight gain. Once he loses the weight, his beard will be lost as well.

Game of the Year
– Winner was Super Mario Galaxy.
– This was the first time that the Nintendo editors did not take part in the discussion – they only submitted their votes. However, they did play all of the contenders.
– Craig and Matt voted for Galaxy, but Bozon voted for Call of Duty 4 because he loves multiplayer FPS.
– Call of Duty 4, Bioshock and Mass Effect were all deserving of winning, though Mass Effect less so due to its technical issues.
– Such an incredible year of gaming that the decision was very hard to make compared to previous years – at least 5 games would have automatically been 2006 GOTY.
– Surprised that Bioshock didn’t win any of the major awards.

CES
– Matt’s one of IGN’s tech-nuts.
– Looked around the Apple and MAC areas as well as TV and projectors.
– There would be lots of worthless Wii accessories – there was a Cooking Mama accessory which changed the controller into a fork, a Zelda sword and shield that blocked the IR, and a Trauma Centre scapel add-on.
– Found it pretty boring – gets worse and worse everywhere, and always bring back old products rather than E3 which bring in new ones.

Poll: Lack of Wii stock biggest disappointment, Wii set to lose console wars

By  •  December 13, 2007

Thursday 13th December/…MCV, the leading trade publication for the videogames industry, has today published the results of its annual independent retailer survey – with the release of Halo 3 being lauded as the best single moment in 2007.Microsoft claimed a triple-whammy, as the publisher was voted the best in terms of overall quality and attitude throughout the year. In addition, Xbox 360 is considered the format to win the next generation battle, with 49 per cent of the vote. PlayStation 3 came second – with 35 per cent – and Wii third with 16 per cent of the vote. It’s probably no coincidence that the Nintendo format’s notoriously tight supply issues was voted the biggest disappointment of the year.

The independents’ biggest concern is the supermarkets – their increased market share was specified by 62 per cent as the biggest problem facing games retailers at the moment. Discounting on new releases – often driven by the same supermarkets – came second in the list of greatest concerns, with 28 per cent of the vote.

Despite this, 85 per cent of stores reported being confident about their business in 2008 – a huge endorsement on the games industry, which continues to generate more and more revenues year by year.

“It’s software, not hardware, which provides a continual revenue stream for UK retail, so it’s no surprise that one of the year’s most celebrated games proved to be the independents’ highpoint,” says Neil Long, editor, MCV. “Of greater concern are the more general supply issues which not only impact takings, but disappoint customers. But despite this, the outlook looks incredibly positive.”

What title will be the All Formats Christmas Number 1?

1. Need For Speed: Pro Street 42%
2. Call of Duty 4 16%
3. Assassin’s Creed 10%
4. Mario Galaxy 6%
5. WWE Smackdown 5%
6. Guitar Hero III 4%
7. FIFA 4%
8. Pro Evo 2008 4%
