I had the honor of interviewing Jools Watsham, Co-owner, and art director at Renegade Kid. We talk about everything from their upcoming title Dementium 2 to the newly announced Nintendo 3DS.
Editors Note: The interview was done over skype call, answers may not be word for word from Jools.
Q: Where did the name for Renegade Kid Come From?
A: We wanted a combination of something edgy and playful. Renegade is a great word and rebellious one, and kid is more of a playful thing.
Q: Tell us a little about dementium II?
A: Dementium II is really different in every way. Its great to make a sequel to a game we made in the first placee. Big difference is the visual verity, from the hospital, like in the first one , to a snowy environment. Dementium: The Ward had the same environment, the hospital, we wanted to get away from this in Dementium II. So we added different environments, enemies, weapons. Variety is the big thing we went for. Unlike the first game, you can now jump and crouch and destroy things that are around in the environment, with some of the weapons. I am really happy with it, no regrets at all. It was a smooth project to work on, and we had fun and squeezed as much in as possible.
Q: How did you accomplish what you needed on the DS? Any limitations you ran into with the DS?
This is one of my favorite post of the Week. Its a time when I get to talk directly to our readers just to wish you all a happy weekend …

Hand-Held Pokémon Adventures and New Wii Remote Colors are on the Way
REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 14, 2009 – Consumers nationwide continue to snap up Nintendo products for the holidays, and Nintendo is poised to carry that momentum into 2010. Dozens of games for the Wii™, Nintendo DS™ and Nintendo DSi™ systems are on the way in a wide range of categories from both Nintendo and its third-party partners.
To bring a little color to the winter months, Nintendo will release two new colors for its Wii Remote™ controller. Starting Feb. 14, the controller will come in Pink or Blue and will be bundled with a Wii MotionPlus™ accessory. Along with the current White and Black versions of the controller, now every player in four-player matches can have his or her own color.
“During the holidays, tens of millions of Americans are going to spend enjoyable hours with both Wii and Nintendo DS,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “And the enjoyment will only grow in the early weeks of 2010, whether your taste in gaming comes from exploring ocean depths, catching, training and battling Pokémon or even designing your own micro-games.”
GTA: Chinatown Wars
– Craig got to play it last week
– Showed him early part of the game
– Craig had certain expectations, he’s pretty psyched
– A lot of emphasis placed on touchscreen “side-things”
– Will need your stylus in your hand
– One minigame has you shoving trash aside looking for drugs
– Game engine runs on top screen, bottom screen is where the story happens + touch screen minigame
– Fixed perspective angle
– Never cuts away from action on the top-screen – will still see action on top screen during minigames
– Not hiding from being M-rated
– You’re a drug dealer – buy and sell drugs, dialoge all f-bombs and s word, there is violence
– Blood stays on the road when you run over someone
– Bozon’s excited for the game
– Engine itself runs really smooth – Craig didn’t see frame rate falter – 30 FPS
– No voice-overs, subtitles in cut-scenes – there’s only environmental voice – radio stations are instrumental (probably due to limitations of the cartridge)
– Can listen to radio while walking around
– Not too much humor in the first 5 missions
– Surveillance cameras are hidden packages in the city – if you destroy one of the cameras it can affect the price of what you can get for drugs
– Comes out March 17
– Game is ambitious, it’s a full-fledged GTA experience – Taken seriously at Rockstar
– Bozon thinks he might get more play out of Chinatown Wars than GTAIV
– Huge focus on online – next month we’ll know more about online
San Francisco, Calif., Jan. 13, 2008 – Mastiff, a worldwide publisher of videogames and Renegade Kid, developer of innovative interactive software, today announced that the highly anticipated first-person shooter (FPS) Moon for Nintendo DS™ has shipped to stores nationwide.
Developed by Renegade Kid, Moon is a story-driven sci-fi, action-adventure title for Nintendo DS™. Moon places gamers on the cold lunar surface in the year 2058 where researchers are shocked to find a sealed, alien hatch during construction of a new lunar base. However, it is a shock that soon pales in comparison to what they find beyond the hatch.
“Moon has come a long way since its initial unveiling as ‘Project M’ and we couldn’t be happier with the end result,” said Bill Swartz, Head Woof of Mastiff. “It was a labor of love and we hope that players enjoy its gripping story and fast-paced gameplay as much as we do.”

Facebreaker
– “Party version of Facebreaker,” but title is misleading (not really minigames)
– Graphics look great – art style is impressive, moves nicely
– Gameplay has a lot of promise also, but Matt wasn’t able to play it long
– Shot from the sideview, still a 3D boxing game
– Very fast, arcadey
Skate It
– Still not a lot of gameplay available in the version Matt + Daemon played
– Will be a learning curve, but it’ll be a “cool” way to play a skateboarding game – Daemon
– Programmed intuitively
– Grinding all about timing
– Visually not too impressive
– Framerate needs to be up and running – lag won’t be good for the game
