NINTENDO WII WINS 2007 CUSTOMERS’ CHOICE AWARD, DESPITE SHORTAGE IN LEAD UP TO CHRISTMAS

By  •

The Nintendo Wii was judged the most popular of the big three consoles in 2007, despite extreme shortages of the console in the lead-up to Christmas, according to reviews from genuine purchasers collated by independent review publishers, Reevoo.

The Wii achieved an overall score of 8.78 out of ten, compared with 8.25 for the PlayStation 3 and 7.65 for the Xbox 360. Sony’s PlayStation scored highest on value for money, rating 7.96, versus 7.70 for the Wii and 7.15 for Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

Reviewers praised the Sony console for the integration of a Blu-Ray player, contributing to its leading value for money score.

The Wii was praised for its usability, child friendliness and exercise potential in verbatim comments from buyers collated by Reevoo.

The Xbox 360 scored well for graphics and design, but fared poorly in other areas. One reviewer described it as being “[as] heavy as my nan after she’s eaten an entire elephant.”

By  •

BRISBANE, Calif. – December 21, 2007 – IGN Entertainment’s GameSpy (http://www.gamespy.com), the ultimate Web site for multiplayer gaming, has announced its 2007 “Game of the Year” winners in various platform and themed categories. The “Game of the Year” is an annual list honoring the best games released in the past 12 months. GameSpy’s editors have declared Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare “Overall Game of the Year”, with The Orange Box and BioShock finishing in second and third place, respectively. Additional titles across each platform have been revealed throughout the week. The full list of winners, and a look back at the gaming world in 2007 are available at http://goty.gamespy.com/2007/.“This year was great in terms of high-quality, action-packed videogames. Gamers saw the next-generation platforms mature with impressive technology, incredible cinematic visuals and more creative and communal experiences,” said Dave ‘Fargo’ Kosak, Executive Editor of GameSpy. “Naming the top games of the year was easy, but ranking the titles in a year with so many great products proved to be a real challenge.”

American Beverage Company Apologies To Gamers

By  •

Folks – The ABA statement is from me and I would appreciate you taking the time to understand the context of our statement and the point we were making about the mayor’s ridiculous plan (which is getting lambasted in the national media, by the way).Bottom line is that weren’t bashing video games, but saying it is just as silly to tax retailers who sell soda as it would be to tax high tech companies who make video games, computers and search engines — all important industries in SF area. If you read our full statement, it attacks the mayor’s flawed strategy and logic of singling out one food or beverage as the cause for a complex problem of childhood obesity – thus deserving of unique taxation. Our point is that it would be equally flawed to single out video games as a driving source for obesity. (And if you aren’t aware – there are advocacy groups that do blame video games and computers as much as soda for childhood obesity and think they should be regulated in ways similar to foods and beverages to discourage “screen time” by kids and teens.)

Here’s what our statement said: “We certainly hope the mayor doesn’t pursue the flawed strategy of taxing retailers who sell soft drinks. Not only would it have no impact on childhood obesity, it would highlight a significant lack of understanding about the complexity of this problem by government leaders. It makes no sense to single out one food or beverage product to address an issue created by a lack of balance between calories consumed and calories burned. If one were to follow this FLAWED LOGIC (emphasis added here for purpose of this blog entry), the mayor also should tax all the high-tech companies in San Francisco for their culpability in contributing to childhood obesity through their video games, computer games, and Internet search engines that keep kids glued to their chairs instead of outside playing and burning calories.” It goes onto to talk about balanced lifestyles as the most effective way to address childhood obesity.
